It's just the same as with any repair process; Trace and Test. Start at the tach itself, test any connections, clean, and move down the line till you get to the end. Good luck
It seems my tach is totally analog, no connections to clean. I haven't pulled the tach cable out yet to inspect it, but I suspect it's something in the engine side of the tach cable. The end that goes into the tachometer isn't spinning or anything.

Well, since it's mechanical, you'll be able to visibly see the issue when you take it all apart and inspect it. I'm going to be installing an electrical one, and I'm nervous about that because electronics are sneaky. Good luck!
