Forward and backward movement on my handlebars 81 xs400

Hi

I notice that I can pull or push my handlebars forward or backwards about an inch in either direction. Takes some effort to do this but they move. They are not spinning or loose. It appears like there is movement on the bushings under the mounts.

Been a long time since I road one of these. Is this normal?

Rubber damped bar mountings.

So I guess that's a yes this is normal?

Feels kind of weird to push turn and have the bars move a bit. Going to have to get used to it

They should move a little but not be sloppy. Make sure the nuts are tight and your not missing any washers. You can add rubber fender washers from any hardware store to take up any extra play.

Definitely not sloppy. And I did check for tightness on all of the assembly. Looks fine. I am just not used to any movement on my H D.

Just wanted to make sure a little movement is normal

Shouldn’t move that much, I bought new rubbers for £8 each.
How high are your bars? That will give a lot of leverage
