I don't have a center stand, and I need to do the forks.

What do people do for holding the bike in this sort of a situation?

I could buy a centerstand.

I could probably use a ladder and some ratchet straps, but that's not ideal.

Any other common workarounds?

Twas a video I saw the other day in youtube discussing fork seals and he had made a frame to support the bike just under the head tube.

I stacked 4 2x4s, screwed them together, picked up the front of my bike by the triple tree, and set the frame on the 2x4s, with the 2x4s right behind the cross brace under the oil filter.
That put the front wheel about 4 inches off the ground

The biggest reason for having the center stand is it’s the only way to check your oil level correctly. Being able to work on the bike anywhere you go is another

I didn't want to wait, so ladder it was.

:)
