Hey folks,

I am new to the xs world but picked up an 81 400 to bastardize for use at Mad Max events because I read you can add a kick start to it (my pull start Predator 212 powered CB500 wasn’t cutting it in the desert) because I want the back up and reliability of a mechanical starting system.

Anyhow I found the the shaft and pedal on ebay no problem but I can’t seem to find any information on a corresponding engine cover with the hole for the shaft to do the conversion. How off base am I? Do I need to drill it out myself? Also after reading the forum I see that it looks like the shaft is missing the washers that go on, if someone could share the official name for them I would be very appreciative.

I promise I am not as inept as I feel writing this out, the platform is new and I truly enjoy hands on learning.

thanks guys

pic is my 73 cb that has since been stripped of goodies and sent on down the road.

Is this a SOHC or a DOHC XS400?

They are pretty much completely different bikes. The SOHC had the kickstart from factory. DOHC, I don't know if there is a way to put one on it.

Welcome and props for your creative bent! I totally missed learning about that desert in Rhode Island in my geography class. Yeah looking at your avatar photo it looks like a DOHC engine. Not certain how to do a kick start on that, although with your creativity you may be able to.

Well damn lol I suppose I should have done a bit more reading. Thanks guys

Side note: the festival is called Wasteland Weekend, it’s held on the California side of the Mojave. If you are into Mad Max you should check it out.
