Hey guys and gals. I just purchased a 1977 Xs 400 and I'm finding out a couple different things about this bike piece by piece. Cleaned the carbs and adjusted. But my points are giving me problems and I will be replacing them and the condensers. Anyways when I opened up the stator cap oil leaked out and I'm not sure why. Any ideas? Thank in advance.

There should be oil in there. But that cover and the case also should have a gasket not what ever that blue and gray stuff is. I would get the correct gaskets and clean the other stuff out. It can come loose and plug up oil feed holes.

thanks chris yeah the gasket on the cover is still there and in solid shape. but i think the previous owner put some form gasket sealer on the inside, do you think i just need the one gasket on the cover? or i should get one for the inside case aswell?

I'd be careful there, 'both' can mean the outer cover gasket and the inner bigger main cover to crankcase gasket or it can mean two outer smaller cover gaskets next to each other (WRONG).

One never knows truly what the net is thinking..............look at that trump thing.

The round outside one and the larger oblong inner one. If you get the gasket kit you will see them. It’s a good idea to get the kit anyway as it will be cheaper in the long run and you most likely will need others.

Search by OEM part numbers. I have seen points and condenser sets listed for under $20 on ebay.
