Im a little new to the cafe racer scene. I have a 81' xs 400 special in pretty good shape all original so I dont want to change it too much. But does anyone know if the is cafe style seat that wouldn't take any modifactions to the frame, just removing other parts.

If you're talking about anything with a bubble on the back it is unlikely such a thing exists. I have seen some new, slightly more aggressive seat cushions on ebay, but they run around $150-200 shipped. Other than that you can modify your existing cushion foam, but it would have to be reupholstered.

Ultimately, there is no cheap bolt on solution. If you want a cafe-style seat there is going to be some work involved; metal fabrication, fiberglassing, and/or chopping of the frame bits. The stock frame is not exactly flat or level and the battery box on my '78 protrudes above the frame rails.

BC is correct, you can buy cafe seats that well fit the frame, but it would not mount the same as your stock seat. You would have to come up with a way to mount it. Some welding may be in order but nothing extreame.

I can make you a seat. I made one to fit my stock mounts, just added a underseat trim piece, I will post a pic now. so should be first one or so under pictures.
Im thinking 125. plus shipping. so say 150. have to check on what materials you wanted as I get stuff from a fabric store, plywood, and foam.

There was also someone posting in the classifieds who is a custom seat maker. They emailed me back and said that they can make a custom seat from your current seat pan. Their prices weren't as low as sickbikers tho.

Sickbiker I would also possibly be interested in a seat for my '77 xs400 if you're interested (probably wouldn't be til next spring because I need time for inspiration :-D)

Any one know of a guide or place where plans can be found for a cafe racer style seat.

i have a 1980 XS400 special.

what kind of welds do you guys think are involved. thanks

If any of you are weld capable you may be able to make your own seat pans, with some slight trial and error. You may have seen Dustin Kotts tutorials on youtube of building a cafe seat.
he has a really cool video about his shop as well. https://vimeo.com/21847668 I have a stick welder at home so I think I might give it a go.

hey great post halfbreed. im taking a welding class this summer so at the end of that when i get certified i might try this project.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope your day is going well. I am writing you to ask if you build custom cafe racer seats. My bike is a bit bigger than most and would like to know if you can build me one with 630mm by 340mm seat something similar that can fit a yamaha xj750.
Thank you and I wish you a good day
Sincerely
Deglel
