vin number

i just bought and fixed a xs400 he said it was from 83-84 he hasn't had it registered before as they just used it as an off road bike and it has had some custom paint done to it , but it has what i believe to be the original vin on it but it doesn't make since because it starts with a 14w-000261, and cant find anything online as to what it may be for model, its kickstart only so my assumption is that its a sohc and xs400 e but not sure any insight is super appreciated

83 should have a proper VIN. They started in 82 if I remember right.

Where did you find the number you have?

14w is the canada version of the 82 sohc heritage special from the u.s. but with mag wheels and front disc. Post some pics of it.
