have the 79/80 xs250 ,the starter motor wont kick the motor over , sounds like it cant spin fast enough to kick the motor over and other times it just seems to just throw out , different set up to the xs650 where the culprit was the wish bone spring ,presume its the same starter as the 360 and 400 so is this a common prob and where should i go looking ,this is fairly importent to me as with dodgy legs cant kick it over , has a healthy battery and po said always been that way in the 5 yrs he owned it no matter what he tried ... also best place to find parts for the 250

Not familiar with the XS650s but after googling the wishbone gear I am pretty certain our starter systems are completely different.
There's the starter motor, a sprocket, a chain, a sprocket and starter clutch on the alternator, which is on the crankshaft.

It is pretty common for the starter clutch springs or other internals to wear and stop grabbing the crankshaft.

the xs650 and 250 starters are completely different but was just using the 650 as eg , mine is the 79-80 model according to the po , are all the starter motors and its parts off the 250 / 360 / 400 the same and interchangible and if not the clutch springs whats the next suspect , also best place to find replacement springs etc ... thanks

Yes on the starter clutch being the problem which is usually what goes bad on these. Search by OEM part numbers as these where only used on the xs400/360/250 sohc bikes. Some internal stuff might cross over to other bikes but not sure what if any ones. These parts in a new stock is very hard to find.

was surprised just got on yambits and found a repair kit for both the starter clutch and a kit for the starter ,as well as a full gasket kit , the shipping was almost as much as the items though , main thing is i got them ... hopefully will solve the probs ... NOW THE CARBY KIT AND GASKETS IS THE NEXT ONE .. looked up bs32 carbs and looks like used on a few other brands of bikes so mightnt be to hard to find ... mmm maybe wasnt as cheap a buy after all
