iv just had a 1980 xs250 follow me home , iv a couple of xs650 s as well so imagine my surprise when i found this forum as well when chasing info on it .. have a current thread on xs650.com at the moment as didnt know this forum existed (by the way lots of help was given on the other site) never having anything to do with the xs250/360/400 i presume they are just bored out 250s , (forgive me if im wrong cause i dont know any better but willing to learn) but with a few rolling stock variations eg twin discs on the 400 .. bought y/day and dropped into a shop on the way home for the safety cert (otherwise known as a rwc here in oz) so havnt had a chance to have a good play with it yet , as a new toy will no doult have to pick a few brains here but it did come with a workshop manual but a parts manual would definitly come in handy ... anyway gidday to my new friends here and hullo to any old ones from the xs650.com that are also here

Welcome! It is good you have the shop manual. Regarding parts, quite a number of Yamaha dealers in the US have their parts manuals on-line. I did a quick search for the xs250 and one came up (https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs250-1979-3n6-europe-293n6-300e1_model37795/partslist/). This is in the Netherlands and is for a 1979 model, but at least is is something to start with. Perhaps some Yamaha shops in Oz have an on-line listing for the 250 also - worth a few minutes to look into.

thanks capt , got on the aust ebay last night and found a parts manual for it au $21 delivered plus new std rings for 1 cyd , another set of barrels / heads / good 2nd hand pistons and a new set of std rings came with it , handy to have spare rings in case of breaking one fitting , it also came with a shit load of other parts , now just have to find out what parts are interchangible between the 250/ 360 and 400 as that could make life easier

There was also a double overhead cam xs250.
None of those parts will be compatible.

I believe the XS360 was the first model out, followed almost immediately by the xs250, then the 400 a year later.
360s and early 400s are almost identical. Different camshafts, slightly different BS34 carbs but still 34s, and of course different cylinder bores.
Later 400s changed more significantly and got electronic ignition.
The 250s had BS32 carbs and actually outlived the 360, eventually getting the DOHC version.

Information and parts for 250s are rare. I'm not sure what the 1980 model came with, when or if they went to electronic ignition prior to the DOHC.
There is definitely more info and parts for the sohc than DOHC bikes.

Get the Haynes manual as well from the links at the top of the garage.
The cmsnl link will probably be the closest parts list you'll find.

I would stick with your stock bs32 carbs for best overall performance.

mine is the 79/80 model which i think was the sohc , your right, getting the feeling these parts are hard to find , been looking for a set of diaphrams for the bs32 carbs and not having a lot of luck .. a carb change over might be a no choice or maybe look for something almost as rare in oz a 400 motor to swap over but that will be a last resort as besides the seat / blinkers and colour its fully original ... opps just been on ebay and found a set of diaphrams in the uk au$93 but not much else

lol , just got off the ph with yamaha , cant get a carb kit but needle and seat assembelly 60 bucks ea and bowl gasket 21 ea both on back order from japan add postage etc etc going on 200 bucks aust plus 100 for new diaphrams from elsewhere = 300 can get a complete vm30 round slide swap over kit , carbs gaskets / cables / filters etc for 550 with out worrying about anything wrong with the carbs , any one got any cheaper alternatives
