Grabbed a 1978 xs400 2e - Kick start only in okay shape. Been cleaning the carbs, new oil, battery etc. When taking a look at the frame I noticed this dent. Could this be the end of this bike - as in not safe to ride any more?

Pretty bummed out and looking forward to any feedback. Perhaps it can be saved or should I save my time and limited money for another project? Thanks for any insight.

hard to tell how bad from your photo , but possible maybe to put / weld a 1/2 sleave over it , they are not a high powered bike and depending on local regs , some counties /states would allow it others NO , from the little i can see i would ride it but also depends on what inspections it may have to go through

Thanks for the insight. Was thinking of the welding of sleeve too. And Im only riding around town. I've uploaded some more pictures. Trying to figure out what the hell happened such a weird spot to have this dent.

dont know about the usa but here when a bike/car is written off they are put on a register , i would check if the usa or your state has one , only time seen frame dent like that was when a bike hit the tow bar of a car/truck , wiped out whole front end of the bike and left a frame dent about where that one is , would also check that the frame is straight no matter what you decide
