Hardtailed77's "Re-build Thread"

....And a little more polishing. I finished the sprocket cover, and even tackled the crankcase breather cover, and the finned oil filter cover (which was a pain!). It's starting to come together. I painted the starter motor cover satin black just to see what the contrast is gonna look like. I temporarily put the carbs back on too, to see what the whole thing looks like. Let me know what you guys think...

I like the contrast, been thinking of painting mine aswell.
The blacked out carbs look great!

There is however something that makes the carbs look more flat black, and the starter cover more glossy. But could be an illusion.

Nice job!

No illusion, you're seeing it correctly. I painted the carbs about a month ago, and used a different paint today on the starter cover. Which do you think looks better? I can go either way with the paint...

yea i loiks the flat black best.

the only issue i cn se is when you spill fuel on those carbs, the paint will run (unless you used PJ1 or similar and cured it in the oven)

I was thinking a satin black....something like a semi-gloss, but I'm not entirely sure yet. The paint on the carbs is just engine paint out of a spray can. I like working on the bike as much as I like riding, so if I have to re-paint in the future, I'm ok with that.

Did the engine cleaner work alright, I know that i forgot to tell you not to let it dry on the part cause it doesn't work as well. Its an trick I used on my vw's to get rid of the layers, bring back the og paint.

since mines alteady apart im just gonna powerwash and degrease the hell outta it, but wat about like wood and clear silicone just to seal it, then scrape it off after? it just came to me, but that feels kinda skippii-esque

Hardtail, i love the bike it's looking really good. I see we both like really low bikes lol. I got a question for ya, I got a 21 inch front rim that I want to lace to my stock brake drum. Did u have to get custom spokes made I so where from. Reason I ask is cause I called Buchanan and they said my drum won't lace to a rim that came with a rotor without it looking like crap.

It worked alright. It worked better on some parts then others. On a few pieces, it looked like it sort of etched the aluminum underneath the paint, but it all came off with sanding, so it may have just been stubborn paint. lol Thanks for the tip man!

Thanks man! Yeah, I love the ride height where it's at, so I'm really trying to keep it with the new hardtail. I did have to get the wheel re-laced. There is a tiny local shop that does it. I can try to give them a call and see if they have the records, but I don't think they keep them that long. I wish I could help more.

Well no pictures, but still an update. lol I have been looking for a "fake oil tank" to hide all of the electrics in, but didn't want to spend a ton of money on a new one. I stopped by this house down the road to see if the guy could help me out. His ENTIRE front yard is full of old lawn tractors! haha Told him roughly what I needed and he hooked me up with a fuel tank from a 60's (from what he said) Cub Cadet. Only cost me a ten dollar bill! I talked to the fella forever it seems. He's like 75 years old, been "collecting" for over 50 years he said!! I'm gonna post some pics of my score tomorrow.

He informed me that if I needed anything else that he would sell to me CHEAP!! So....if anyone else needs a "fake oil tank", let me know, and you can have it for cost plus shipping. Just thought I'd throw out the offer.
