My 1982 xs400 seems to have a delayed throttle. what could be causing this to happen?
I will roll on the throttle and there is a delay before it starts to give it gas. could this have something to do with the throttle cable or is it something internal?

Mind you I'm brand new at this so if this seems like a simple question please humor me. i have the manual downloaded to my computer from this site and ive looked through it but like i said im new and i dont really know what im looking for.

Any help would be much appriciated.

i just bought it about a week ago and have put about 30 miles on it since i bought it i filled up the tank and put some gumout carb cleaner in it. im not sure if that will help the issue or not but its a start on cleaning them i suppose.

would a manual cleaning be necessary?

not knowing the history of the bike, or what condition it's in, I couldn't say.

manual cleaning its always good

I'm also new to this, but i'm trying to get some good advice karma.
I had a similar issue and was advised to adjust the float needles. I added two small washers to both needles and put it back together and the throttle felt way better. I also had an ultrasonic cleaning done before this, and I'm sure the cleaner the better. If cleaning is t the answer, look at the needles.

why would you put washers on float needles? can it be done?

unless you mean the main jet needles

If your used to the instant responce of a vm carb then the cv carbs will have a bit of lag. The vm carbs the throttle cables hook right to the slides. On a cv carb the throttle cable is hooed to the throttle plates. As you open the throttle the plate turns and changes the airflow in thecarb, the carb sences this change and lifts thye slide to match the needs of the engine.
This leaves just a bit of lag betwen turning the grip and engine speed changes.

Have you looked at the lubrication and general condition of the throttle cable? Mine used to bind when i'd ignored the drylube on the bar and the wet lube on the cable. Check both. You'll enjoy the results. Also I'd degrease the springs that return your cable to zero position. They attract dirt and crust up ruining throttle movement. Good luck
