So, looks like I've got some leaking behind my points. I was planning on tearing the engine apart this winter and putting new gaskets in anyways, but now it'll have to be done sooner.

What gaskets do I need for just the top end rebuild?

I can find kits for around $50, but if I can find just a few gaskets for cheap instead of having to buy the kit for the whole engine i'd rather do that.

Just curious as to what everyone else was using/where they got theirs?

Thanks

I don't suppose these are the gaskets that some guys on here make out of corn flakes boxes, are they?

There are rubber plugs that go behind the points cover as well as a seal that goes at the end of the cam shaft. If you have a leak its one of them.

Thanks xs! I keep putting off tearing into it cuz I'm lazy but ill make sure I have some of those too before I begin.

Just ordered a complete gasket kit off eBay. $45 after shipping. I guess not bad. Will be in next week. I will hopefully get it done and plan on doing some pics as I tear into my engine/rebuild it.

Ok so I finally got around to tearing into my engine. I didn't go down past cylinder head. I only replaced the top gasket as that's where the oil was coming from. Pistons(top of anyways) looked ok. Got it back together and put my new gel battery on. And after many attempts got it running today. Idled fine. Throttle responded ok. But there's some smoke coming from right exhaust where it comes out of the engine. And a tiny amount out of the end of the left side exhaust. Is this normal after doing any kind of rebuild? I also replaced oil and oil filter. Wanted to make sure before I let it run too long. Could this be build up or excess burning off?

Just to clarify, the right cylinder exhaust smoke is coming out where the header attaches to the engine (not out the tip of the exhaust pipe) and the smoke from the left cylinder is coming out the tip of the pipe?

Correct. And I went back out and started it, rode down the road and back. Not smoking out of left exhaust tip now. And barely any coming from right side where header joins engine.
