    Spec for a 78 XS400 2E

According to the Haynes manual (which lists almost all of the settings for my bike in the back on 9 pages,) my 78 2E has preset pilot air screws. I replaced them as part of my carb rebuild, so now I have absolutely no idea how many turns out to set them at. The other models are listed at 3.5...

    Hammer stock fenders?

Would it work if I just cut and hammered out the stock fenders? I thought about using them to make a custom front and rear fender for my 78, but both are chromed and I don't know if it would be good for cutting and hammering. My bike is a brat tracker build, if that helps.

    Rear brake setup

Could someone please show me the entire rear drum setup? I have a 78 XS400 and I can't get the setup right. I don't know which spring needs to be attached to get the brake lever to spring back, PLUS when I press the brake, instead of the brake arm pulling towards the front of the bike, it...

    New parts for first rebuild

Since I'm rebuilding my carbs for the first time and probably for the first time since the bike was made (78 XS400) I was hoping to find all of the parts needed for a good rebuild. I'm looking for all the jets and gaskets, but I keep finding them all separately. Is there a site that sells a...

New Private Message Won't Show Up

I have a new private message notification showing up but when I go to open it it says there isn't anything there. It's still flashing and displaying that I have one, but when I click to open it it isn't there at all.

    Stupid air jet

So I'm taking the carbs apart to clean them before putting them back on my 78. They are filthy, probably weren't even cleaned by the previous owner. The pictures are what it looked like under the float seat and how much junk came out of just those from both carbs. While I'm soaking the needle...

    CLEAN SPOKES?!?!

I spent about 6 hours and 5 sheets of sandpaper getting my front spokes around 90% clean. There has to be an easier way, right? I still have to get the small sections that the sandpaper didn't hit. I'm thinking of using a dremel, but now that they are mostly clean, how would I go about...

Carb Time! Wait, what about these Springs?

I just started cracking open the carbs and I have 2 questions so far. One, are these springs supposed to be the same length, or does it matter? And secondly, is it normal for one side to be much cleaner than the other?

All in ons gauge? Or how about this one?!

I'm in the process of finishing my brat tracker build, and while I like the look of no gauges, I still want some. I found this http://www.powersportsplace.com/parts/bkc-49-0291?seid=pspse1&gclid=COmQpbi25MICFe7m7AodMS8A8A And it looks pretty good (the price looks even better) but if I could...

    Where does this go?!

During my teardown and rebuild I came across this part. I think it came off of my XS400, but I'm not for certain. Does anyone recognize it?

    Time to clean!

Cleaning and rebuilding is starting soon and on my list I have: Gas tank Forks Steering bearings Oil and oil filters My question is, do any of you have recommendations for the type of grease for the steering bearings, oil for the forks, and cleaner and liner for the gas tank? I'm anxious...

    XS650 to XS400 Compatible Parts?

I'm about to start rebuilding my swingarm and I've been on Mike's XS, but a lot of the parts I need, like the pivot pin, are listed as being for the XS650. Are swingarm components compatible with the 400? Is there a list somewhere that names off the parts that are interchangeable? It would...

    Cut for the Seat Hoop

I need to cut the frame and weld on a hoop before I can continue with my project. I'm probably going to go with this hoop from Dime City Cycles http://www.dimecitycycles.com/dcc-originals-diy-custom-rear-tail-hoop-for-large-cc-motorcycles.html My question is, with my 78 xs400 2-e, am I going...

    Carb rebuild question

I'm about to rebuild the carbs on my 78 XS400 and I have a question about the rebuild kits that I found. Will this kit for a 1977 XS400 fit on a 1978? http://www.siriusconinc.com/pro-detail.php?pid=&product_id=698 If so, why is there another section for a 1978-1979...

    New lady, need rubbers!

I just bought my first motorcycle, a 78 Yam XS400-2e and I'm already in love with it. I plan on restoring it this winter, but after looking it over I noticed that I need pretty much all of the rubber (for the turn signals) and grommets (for the side covers) and figured I would just replace all...
