    Restoration - frame stickers?

Hey guys, long time no talk. I have my bike pulled down completely to the frame. I'm about to start stripping the frame and tank (and I'm sure I'll have many, many more questions), but my primary question is - how do you preserve the frame sticker on the head tube? I'm planning on sand blasting...

    Restoration...kinda. need help!

Hey guys! A couple years ago I bought an xs400 that hadn't run since 1987. Bought it for a steal and got it running. Did 5,000 miles on it last year and loved it. This year, I bought another bike with the intention of tearing down the 400 and doing a restore on it. I want to restore the bike...

    Regearing

Alright, finally got the old boy back together. So now we're sporting stock tire sizes (100/90-18 front, 120/90-16 rear), with a 17 tooth sprocket. Didn't have much opportunity to get some speed out of it, but at 60, we're appearing to be at about 5200 RPM. I like the way it rides around...

Where on earth can I get spokes?

Yeah, I fleabayed it, and got a set of spokes. I should be set for life with 36 spares...said the guy who hasn't knocked on wood today.

Where on earth can I get spokes?

The front ones are fairly easy to find, but where on earth can I find 16" wheel spokes? I have a 16" rear with a drum brake, and there isn't a place on earth (or at least, in my corner of it) that either has the proper length spokes, or can cut spokes to length...So where on earth do I get...

    Regearing

Chris, I'm struggling with numbers here... With a stock tire size, with the stock 16/37 sprockets, 60mph should be about 6000 RPM, from what I read on here, and from a bit of fudging with my real-world observation...If each front tooth is worth 500 RPM, how are you getting a 1200 RPM decrease...

Are there any places where I could nab a 36 tooth sprocket?

    Regearing

That's alright, I find after about 35 mph I'm in 6th gear anyway...It'd probably be healthier to stir it around a bit more than that...

    Regearing

I did count the teeth, they're 16/37. It's not a slipping clutch - it'll spin the tire (lazily) when it's on the center stand and you rev it in neutral. I understand that 6000 RPM @ 60 mph is fairly the norm on these, I chalked up the discrepancy to a smaller rear tire, as I'm running a Shinko...

    Regearing

OK, I've done about as much research as I can on this forum, so time to drop the question... I have an 81 XS400 that currently is running 16/37 gears with a 16" rear wheel. In 6th gear, it runs about 1:100 (I.e. 60= a hair over 6000 RPM). As I do quite a bit of 55+ mph riding, I'd like to calm...

    Wheel builders?

The rims are chrome, and I'd like to keep them shiny (whether chrome, stainless, or polished Aluminum). Rechroming isn't really an option, as there aren't many places in the area that would do it, and I'd like to go from a 16" to 18" rear anyway. Also, the front rim has a flat spot in it...

    Wheel builders?

I think I'd like mag wheels, as I'm not a fan of the idea of spokes going loose, but I really, really prefer the look of spoke wheels, especially on older standard bikes. So, here's the question... The wheels I have are pretty pooched. They work, and I've put a couple thousand miles on them...

Now that it's running, some issues

Alright, I've clocked about 100 miles on the bike, mostly around town driving, but some highway. RPM kinda freaks me out in top gear, but I'm used to a big vtwin on the highway, so 6200 rpm at 60 is a bit of a freak out... Anyway, lately, I've noticed a hanging throttle between shifts and if...

    Finally got to ride it...

Scratch that...the springs didn't help with the low idle. I adjusted the valves. Weird thing was, using the marks on the alternator, the right side was loose enough to jiggle the rockers around, while the left side was tight. Go figure. So I specced the right side to the right tolerance and left...

    Finally got to ride it...

This is like Christmas...after sitting all night at 45ish degrees, it started and puttered without choking, and had great throttle response on half choke.

    Finally got to ride it...

I did. It worked for shit. Next time I"ll build one with PVC lengths to even out the pulses. Regardless, I popped the tops off the carbs and wound them up to shorten them an inch or so - seemed to help the issue of the super low idle. Further, I think I got the clutch adjusted a bit...
