New approach - My get-my-XS-running again thread

So, as usual, the gremlins have re-appeared. PO had the bars flipped, which I was never a fan of, and finally got around to making them right again. Once all back together I thought I'd try starting again. After two weeks of sitting it looks like I'm back to square one. The starter motor is...

New approach - My get-my-XS-running again thread

Now that the areas cleaned up I'm thinking id like to wrap up the wires and try to start it up. Any idea if there are any adverse effects/if it's possible to starting without the field coil in place? I need to get the new one wrapped and cleaned up but can't find a way to run the wires without...

New approach - My get-my-XS-running again thread

After over two years of half assedly asking for help, lurking threads, interjecting here and there, and making little to no progress, I have finally be able to get my machine into my garage to work on it whenever I darn well please. Rather than create new threads every time I have a question...

Gummy junk behind left-side crankcase cover

Now - here's a real n00b dilemma. How do you clean with a solvent? I've just tried with mineral spirits - cuts through the dirt real fast, but how do you get it off easily...? I brought the cover into the house and tried running hot water (which I've discovered doesn't work). Managed to have at...

    Rewiring alternator/starter motor

Hadn't thought of that angle. The field coil in my bike is losing it's insulation enamel - the new one looks pretty clean. I haven't tested them yet. Never thought about redoing the factory splices. I'm not that knowledgeable with mechanical electrics - do you have any resources that might help...

    Rewiring alternator/starter motor

Question for the more electrically inclined: Digging under my XS' left side covers I've discovered the wire shielding for the stator/field coil has worn away and things are shorting out. My wiring for the replacement coil is in better shape but still looks a little suspect. As the wires for the...

Gummy junk behind left-side crankcase cover

Finally finally finally got the bike into my garage and can get working on it! Picked up a '78 parts bike to steal some bits and bobs off to get my baby running. Specifically poaching the field coil from the 78 as mine has shorted out. Now - took off the crankcase to have a look at wires and two...

    Points Cover Screws

And success! Couldn't find a darn driver set anywhere in town but one of the guys at the office kindly lent me one. Two taps and they popped right out. On to the next problem...

    Points Cover Screws

Excellent. Bought some PB blaster and it hasn't done the trick. I think the trouble is too far along the screw for the liquid to get to it. Getting my hands on an impact driver tomorrow - who'd have thought that all hardware stores within reasonable distance of me either don't stock them or are...

    Points Cover Screws

So - are you saying it's not really necessary to get in there? I'm in the middle of troubleshooting my ol' beast and figured I should check every nook and cranny shy of taking the engine apart.

    Points Cover Screws

Sadly I've tried this as well. I've tried placing a hex-driver over the screw head and whacking it with a mallet to unseat it, doing this again with a torch, WD-40, 3-in-1, and a hammer and screwdriver. Makes me think previous owner hasn't looked under the hood in a very long time.

    Points Cover Screws

That's a fair idea. I wasn't thinking about the threads being further back. Went to buy an impact driver and the shop was out - bought a torch and tried that to no avail. I don't have a Dremel and can't cut another screw slot unfortunately. Any other left-field ideas short of a mallet and a pry...

    Points Cover Screws

I have exactly the opposite problem... my points cover screws are tiiiiiiight in there and on the verge of stripping. I've hit them with some wd40 in hopes itll seep a little and loosen them up. Otherwise - any tips?

    '77 vs '79

Hi gang - are there any/many major differences in engines between '79 and '77? My '79 needs a few things and I've found a '77 parts bike that looks to be in pretty fair order. Would be nice to save all the rooting around the internet for parts. Specifically looking at swapping...

    Custom Rewind

Hi gang, Any idea if Custom Rewind in Birmingham, AL is still operating? I've been trying to get ahold of them all week to see about getting my field coil and stator rewound. Side-note - does anyone know of someone in Canada who does similar work? The enamel coating has started to come off my...
