Charging system mystery!! Professional help needed!! it's....complicated

Can I set the float heights without removing the carbs? Cause then i would have to re-sync the carbs! I don't have a sync tool and I just had them done by my mechanic. What is the factory setting for the idle mixture screws? 2.5 right? thanks a lot

Charging system mystery!! Professional help needed!! it's....complicated

Yeah, I know the carbs always raise my eyebrows. I know that the shop rebuilt them because the owner had the bike in the shop when I got it. I spoke directly with the shop and since then had another mechanic ultrasonic clean them and sync them. Then after the winter (I had fuel stabilizer in), I...

Yet another charging system mystery. Please help!

When the bike is started and revved to 2000rpm, the voltage measured across my battery is usually around 12.5Volts. As I get riding on a straight stretch it will get up as high as 15.0 volts. At a stoplight at idle it wants to die and kinda runs like garbage? Do you think it's not getting...

Charging system mystery!! Professional help needed!! it's....complicated

Hey guys... Really need some help trying to sort out my '79 XS400. I've had some major issues along the way since day one with this machine and I'm close to calling it quites. If I don't soon my wife is going to force it!!! Background: I bought a 1979 Yamaha XS400 with 18000 kms on it. Has...

    Cartridge Emulator's

Did those changes make enough difference? What weight of fork oil did you use? 15w? What size of a spacer did you put in? Like pvc pipe? I definitely need to do something to my front forks...they're way too soft!!

NEW! Stator diagnosis tests are all fine....but.......

Awesome man...thanks for the reply! I just found out that the XS360 stator cross-referenced with the XS400!! There are lots of those on ebay. Just ordered one for $20! A lot better than the $150 I was quoted to rewind mine! I will put that bad boy on and hope for the best!!

    Wanted - Stator for a 1979 Yamaha XS400

I just found out that the XS360 part cross-referenced with the XS400!! There are lots of those on ebay. Just ordered one for $20! A lot better than the $150 I was quoted to rewind mine!

    Stator

Interesting...so there was a fourth wire coming off the stator. Do you think that, if I wanted to, I could solder into that terminating wire and use that wore into my headlight relay? Other than the 3 vs 4 wire difference....do you know if there is anything else different between a 1980 vs 1979...

    Wanted - Stator for a 1979 Yamaha XS400

Hey guys, I'm looking for a stator for a 1979 XS400. Maybe you have one on an old parts bike. These things rarely fail, but mine apparently has. Tired of waiting for one to pop up on Ebay! It should have 3 white wires and 1 yellow wire coming off of it. The early 80's XS400 had only 3 wires...

    Stator

wow...thanks guys, that is great info. I'm starting to piece together and make sense of my charging system. All that said...I think that I've narrowed it down to the fact that I have a faulty stator. I measured the AC output at the plug and I get a steady 10volts per wire at idle. When I crank...

NEW! Stator diagnosis tests are all fine....but.......

Wait a second...so after all of this....does this just mean that you got a bad voltage regulator, since the stator and field coil actually work!??!?

just wondering what year of xs this is? do you still have the stator and does it have 3 or 4 wires coming out of it? thx

    Stator

Hey Drewpy, I thought that the output was supposed to be more like 14.5V? When the voltage regulator is not functioning well, does it usually present as allowing too little Volts or too many volts to the battery. Or could the low voltage output also be a function of a damaged stator? Thx

    Regulator/Rectifier Help

You can be sure that I was quite excited when that process was complete. Once it was all re-assembled I cranked her over and she started!!! But...she ran like crap. And...was not charging at all!! That was a bit devastating cause now I had to track down the culprit. I assumed that my new Voltage...

    Regulator/Rectifier Help

I ended up buying a good used wiring harness on ebay and checked every single wire and connection for resistance. I then replaced all of the fried wires to the various components on the bike. I also replaced the R/R...believing that failure of the original Voltage regulator may have been one...

    Regulator/Rectifier Help

More images... I guess the problem had occurred with the previous owner and he had carefully wrapped all the fried areas with electrical tape. To his credit the bike ran ok for the first month I had it but then problems started to surface. I'm assuming that the burnt wires were grounding...

    Regulator/Rectifier Help

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Sounds like you both are a touch more knowledgeable about motorcycle electronics than myself! Good work figuring that stuff out. That being said...still felt a little hesitant to make those changes for fear of making a mistake and repeating the catastrophic...
