Chain tension increases as wheel spins.

Hello I've got a 1980 xs400 special 2. I was noticing a grinding noise and determined it was coming from the chain. Upon inspection I noticed that as the tire rotated everything would be normal until it would hit a spot where the chain tightens up. For now I have the tension set at the tightest...

    Forks leaking at the top.

I took my bike in to see if they could fix my electrical issue.... turns out the fork seals were bad. So i picked up a set and got them to put em on while they had it apart. Now ive got it back, but after a short ride i have noticed that the right fork is now leaking oil out of the top, where...

    Charging issue, stator regulator rectifier

From my experience, if you have a bad regulator but a working stator it will usually result in over changing . The stator produce electricity and the regulator caps it (14.5v on these bikes I believe). I would have the same thing happen where it would stall at a red light. If you hold the brakes...

    Charging issue, stator regulator rectifier

Hey welcome to the forum! So i just typed out a huge response and accidentally deleted it haha. So apologies, this was done in a rush. First off if you need to ride it everyday, and keep getting stuck. I found that unplugging unnecessary lights will help start her up again. I usually start with...

Ready to throw XS in the lake Pt. 2

When working on your xs I suggest only using the kick starter, as you've learned the starter draws a lot of power. Each time you do it will make it even more unlikely to start next time, due to less powerful spark. My bike has charging issues and i find that unplugging all the lights helps to...

Engine leaking oil near the shifter pedal

My first step would be to give the whole area a good clean. Then i'd let it idle and get down on the ground and examine it. Oil can only be lost through burning or leaking. Examine the oil filter cover and o-ring, the drain plug, and all the gaskets. Is it producing lots of blue smoke or just...

Charging system troubleshooting. Whats my next step?

Thanks for taking the time to write so much! First off when i touch the leads on my meter it settles to 0.2. I tested the white wires again today 2 pairs read 0.8 and the other 0.4. Originally i had read 1ohm across all them. None of this taking into account 0.2. Originally when i tested the...

Charging system troubleshooting. Whats my next step?

Been performing charging system tests on my 1980 special 2 according to the manual. Tested the three white wires from alternator and the ohms were not to spec. Does this mean i need a new alternator? What am i looking at having to do? Fairly new to charging systems so im not 100% about anything...

    Ohms affected by temperature?

Alright thanks! So with your guys expertise would you say its the alternator thats dead? I tested the rectifier, it works. I also tested the field coil and it seemed okay. fully charged battery at idle is at like 11.9v. When i unplug brake/headlight it goes up to 12.2ish. With change in rpm it...

    Ohms affected by temperature?

Im troubleshooting my charging system according to the manual. One test is to check the resistance between the three white wires. In the manual it says that the measurement is affected by temperature and should taken into account. So for me the resistance read was one ohm across all wires and i...

    Quick question about testing rectifier.

I have a 1980 xs400 special 2 with charging issues. I've been testing the charging system according to the manual. When I test the rectifier on the continuity setting (the one that beeps) on my multimeter and test the red cable against the whites ones. In one direction there is no connection and...

How Speedometer Works and what Goes Wrong

Hello everyone, i have a 1980 xs400 special 2 (wire wheels and drums front and back) and just today my speedo started acting sporadically, then died on me. I pushed the bike around in neutral and with the cable removed and could see that the cable was not spinning, sometimes getting a few...

Need dimensions of brake light screw

Was riding my 1980 xs400 and my brake light cover fell off (the red plastic). I bought another one online but it didn't come with the hardware. If someone could do me a huge solid and measure the dimensions of the two little screws that hold the red cover in place that would be great!! Thanks
