Question about installing a new chain

Thanks for the replies everyone. Indeed I probably went overboard on the heavy chain but I'm gonna follow this advice and put it on soon anyway.

Question about installing a new chain

So I bought a new JT 530 X1R chain last fall but winter happened and I havent gotten around to installing it until now. My problem is that it now seems a little stiff, even though its never been used. Maybe leaving it sitting out on a bench in my basement all winter wasn't a great idea? Does...

Some Miscellaneous Problems, Experienced Advice Needed

great find. I understand how you wouldn't be able to start if it's not grounded through the signal housing, but is the reverse necessarily true? Do I have to scrape the paint under the starter housing for the signals to work? I also maybe should have mentioned that I got some aftermarket...

Some Miscellaneous Problems, Experienced Advice Needed

The starter has never worked actually, I always kick. Is it enough to just sand where the controls lie over the bars or do I need to sand where the bars are held by the risers as well? I'm also wiring in a new taillight that grounds through its own housing instead of a dedicated wire like the...

Some Miscellaneous Problems, Experienced Advice Needed

Yes they are and I think I see where you're going with this. Is it a grounding problem? Not sure how I would remedy that. Thanks for the ID HoughMade, thats definitely it. I'm also glad to see that pushrod seal replacement is a relatively simple fix, I'm 90% sure thats the culprit.

Some Miscellaneous Problems, Experienced Advice Needed

Thanks ahead to those curious and willing enough to hang out on the forums and dispense knowledge and wisdom to first timers like me. My first problem is a slow but persistent oil leak coming from somewhere around or behind the front sprocket. I bought my '81 Special last summer with 8600 miles...

    Alignment problem after re-assembly

rshutchinson, your tip is definitely the answer. It worked but its tough to get enough hands to hold everything in place. Whenever I tighten down the bolts it seems to push it back out 1 or 2 degrees. I just need a third person or to find some way to twist and hold the handlebar/wheel and torque...

    Alignment problem after re-assembly

Good question. It is pointed to the left (birds eye view), so toe out. The pitch/ camber (assuming I'm understanding those terms correctly) is fine.

    Alignment problem after re-assembly

Hey guys, like many of you in the northeast I'm killing time in the garage while waiting for warmer weather, and recently pulled out the forks and replaced the oil on my '81 XS400SH that I picked up last spring. Everything went ok as far as I could tell, except that once I had everything back...

    Front Caliper Piston Problem

Well, that was easy. Thanks. I also just replaced the rear drum brake shoes and tires on both wheels, and now I'm hearing a very annoying squeek/rattle from the drum brake area with every rotation of the wheel. Sounds like it might have something to do with the springs in the drum. Any ideas?

    Front Caliper Piston Problem

Whats up yo. I am a new owner of a lightly used (8,600 miles) '81 Special and a newb with bikes. I just fucked up my front caliper by using the brake lever when the front wheel/rotor was removed :banghead:, and now I cant get the piston back in, in order to separate the pads enough to fit around...
