1982 Maxim 400 Complete Tear Down and Rebuild

Hows it going, Oops? I'm thinking about doing a tracker build with my Maxim 400. I have a similar plan for my seat, and I'd love to see how yours is shaping up.

    1983 XS400 Maxim Tracker Build

Is it just one circlip that you can't budge, or both? I usually use a hammer and a flathead screwdriver for the top triple. If it's fragile I'll cover the tip of the screwdriver with several layers of duct tape and inspect every couple raps.

The smallest batteries I've seen are DIY batteries that people make. Most of the ones I've seen are out of A123 batteries, and there's a ton of info out there on that. They're light, they're tiny, and from what I've heard they're cheap. If I were looking to get a tiny battery, I'd do that and...

    Cafe Racer Build

I love the early Viragos, and the customs people are turning out are awesome. Here are my favorites. #2 is the one your tank is from. I'm glad someone is using that look as inspiration for a Maxim. I see a lot of potential there.

Backing up to your tank's woes. Managing the rust in your tank is easy, and it's the first step to keeping your bike's fuel passages in ship shape. Whenever you leave your bike for any length of time, fill your tank with gas. This keeps the rust from building up. Also, install an additional...

    1980 XS400 Special II brakes

My $0.02, take a gander at the hand controls. Only a few screws stand in your way, and then you can [at the very least] rule them out. My imagination runs wild putting a 500lb man on that bike. I'm a terrible person.

    '79 XS400 - Petcock and Lean troubles

There are resistance tests you can do to check your coils, wires, and spark plug caps. Check them before you buy new components. I've never done them on an XS, but on my GL1000 and CX500 it's very straightforward with specific tolerances for each component. All you need is a multimeter. A very...

Get it running well before you do your cutting/modifying; especially in regards to intake/exhaust. The farther you get from stock, the harder it is to solve problems like yours. Don't let your cool ideas turn into a big headache :banghead: Not sure what your background is, but these are...

Vacuum line disconnected, is this a problem?

You can't find where to connect the vacuum line, and the bike is running well. Is your petcock a stock unit? If not, it may not need a vacuum.

Or the spark could be significantly underpowered. Check resistances for the coils. It could be a fault in the plug caps, the wires (although you've said those have been replaced), or the coils. Also, if the wire-to-plug-cap connection isn't right it can result in extremely varied performance.

    1981 XS400 aftermarket muffler issues

Try shoving a stainless steel scouring pad from the grocery store in there. Could cause some performance hiccups, but maybe not. Don't use fine steel wool. It'll just melt in the heat, and it's a great fire starter. Stainless steel scouring pads for dishwashing is what I'd try.

    1981 XS400 Special, no spark

Not sure about your SOHCs, but my '82 DOHC won't run when the kickstand is down. If I'm starting it in the garage it has to be on the center stand. Such a silly design. Took me 2 years to figure it out.
