Brought home a XS cafe... need hel getting to fire

Progressive offered 2 different spring rates when I purchased mine. I cant find the part # for the other set. Progressive #11-1115 is what I have. Dennis Kirk has a set, which surprises me. I cannot remember if these were the firmer springs or just the firm ones but they sure did help with...

    Carburetor jet

Both jets are used in the XS bikes. The one with the bleed holes is for XS360 carbs only. DONT throw it away. They are somewhat hard to find. What size is it? 17.5? Correction- The 17.5 is the non-bleed type and thats what goes in 360s carb only. Sorry, my memory tricks me sometimes.... OK most...

    Pilot Jets - Carb - tickover-idle circuit

At one time in my life, Id say sure yea drill them jets out. My opinion has changed over the years though. Use authentic Mikuni jets. Aftermarket jets are not sized right and they arent machined like the Mikunis are. Have you decided on a main jet yet?

Brought home a XS cafe... need hel getting to fire

Nice. Yea if youre using a dyno then youre getting superior results for sure. I definitely have more fun on this bike than my bigger bikes. Its nice to run some gears out on the backroad twisties and keep it under 50mph. New cables make a nice difference in feel, lubing them does too. I always...

Brought home a XS cafe... need hel getting to fire

Its funny, when I put my 360 carbs on the 400 block, I made no jet changes and it ran fine. The running gear on my bike is all stock, with the exception of the Emgo tapered exhausts. Im also at 130 mains with stock 17.5 pilot. The needle is one notch leaner than factory. Floats float height +1mm...

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

Electric is not my strong subject. But theres 2 types of solid state regulators. Bikes with points ignitions need a certain type. The ground polarity is different between the two maybe? Theres one or two threads here worth searching for if you want to know more about it. The regulator is...

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

Ive always wanted to mount the battery on the swingarm. Theres enough room there to get a decent tuck. Im not sure what your plans are, if this is like a beater bike or something you want to take more seriously? Its difficult tuning the bike to run with aftermarket filters. It will never be...

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

You can do whatever you like. The easiest course of action would be to buy a new AGM battery for $75, install it, slap some plates on the bike and enjoy it for a while. Switching to a solid state regulator requires some wire splicing, not hard at all. Get the bike tuned up properly and put some...

1st post: Let me introduce myself

Very nice. Id like to get my hands on a DOHC and see what the difference is between the two.

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

Unless you take the battery inside with you and dont ride below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. I take my batteries inside when Im done riding for the season. The 1977 model year has a points ignition and that helps a lot with conserving battery power. Electronic ignitions demand a certain voltage and...

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

A 120CCA would be slightly larger in size than a Antigravity 8-cell. Ive had no problems hiding the AGM. The 4-cell is also about the same size but its half the thickness of the 8-cell. Antigravity lists their specs for each battery. Lithium puts out roughly twice the CCA as AGM and the price...

    Antigravity battery AG-801 8cell

Welcome. Will it work , yes. Will it last, no. Our charging systems fluctuate voltage too fast for a lithium to handle it. The battery might last one summer. The 1977 XS has a mechanical regulator. you can upgrade to a solid state and then youll have better chances with a lithium. I run the...

    1st post: just acquired XS400

Going to town on that thing! Now would be the time to invest in a decent set of tools. The phillips screws are actually JIS and use a slightly different head, just so you know. Practically everyone uses normal tools anyways but the JIS drivers fit like a key. Im pretty sure those plugs get...

    Carb questions

The float bowl gaskets seem to hold up well if they are intact. I use Jets R Us for OEM mikuni jets. Aftermarket jets are not good and I couldnt get my bike to run well with them. Real jets cost more but theyre better, and theyre authentic. Sirius consolidated supplies some odd and ends. They...

    High Schooler Needs Da Guidance

Welcome, dont touch anything! haha. The VIN will be stamped on the right side case on the top, where the oil fill is. The VIN prefix ( first 3 digits) will tell you the model and year of the bike. The frame should have a matching VIN on the steering neck. The SOHC and DOHC look different and...

    82 xs400 Maxim

AGMs are fine, stay above 120CCA if you want E-start. My bike always had an occasional misfire on the right cylinder on a cold start until it warms up. Never bothered to figure it out and Ive had the bike torn down multiple times in the last few years. Old dry suspension will be very soft wont...

    Carb questions

Welcome. Photos! Tuning is a part of the process and its something you will need to figure out. The easiest and best way to go is to keep it stock. Switching to pod style filters and open exhaust can work but there will always be issues somewhere in the tune whether it stumbles under hard...

Im not sure about that brake fluid. The color doesnt look good at all, could just be the photo or my computers eye-reduction night display. Its wise (essential) to always change all fluids when buying a used bike. Its your life. Batteries without DOM markings got shelved too until I ended up...

    Position of transmission circlips

Im looking at a XS360 case so it couldve changed in later 400 cases. Theres grooves on the top case for the bearings that have C-clips, but no cutout for half-clips.
