    78 xs400 outter head stud

Spectra, appreciate the gesture, will try the SpeedAndSportInc website first, thanks BBS360. I've shipped across borders, never seen much in the way of duties, usually the taxman gets ya. Thanks for the input guys I've been scratching my head for a few days now.

Hey fellas, Dug into my engine to change some leaky gaskets and upon reinstall I broke a head bolt/stud. Part # 1L9-11361-00-00 for anyone who's any good at sourcing parts. Its one of the four outter corner studs. Looking for help sourcing one cause i figured some of you may have better...

    Whatever can go wrong, does.

Bad filming but what can ya do... Look at the top right of the video along the edge of the tire and you can see it kick out for about 1/4 revolution. I found the problem spot, it's between the tire balance weights installed previous to me owning it and the air valve. It's not heavy, it doesn't...

    Whatever can go wrong, does.

Okay new problem with the rear tire. If I'm at the back of the bike and looking down at the tire then spin it, the tire turns for about 3/4 revolution "straight" then for about the last 1/4 rev the profile (think: left chicken strip looking down at the ground without parallax) kicks out a bit...

    Whatever can go wrong, does.

Base Gasket is weeping a bit too yeah, headers burn on a good ride and you can smell it cooking lol. Ah...first bike woes... Might just do the rings anyway due to the big jump in the leak down test (20psi consistently). And I've lost some compression since my very first compression test (168psi...

    Whatever can go wrong, does.

Got new bearings today, installing tonight or tomorrow morning. Cleaned the shit out of the chain and sprocket and turns out they're actually pretty decent. Figured as much, good to hear that I'll give it a shot. Thanks man that's really good to hear. Lots of frustrations but my xs400 is...

    Whatever can go wrong, does.

So long list of problems to take care of right now. Piston Rings Left Cylinder burning oil like a siv, this is new. Gonna re-fit both. -(Just a guess, but leak down test was 130psi, add teaspoon oil, 150psi) Need a new chain as mine is kind of seizing and making terrible noises. Sprockets are...

    Idle Hesitation/Bog - '78 xs400

Thanks for the science, it's so awesome to understand this stuff. PO did some decent mods and some...not so. Yeah I'm not cutting and welding a new battery box around, PO did enough to 'er. I can't find an h-pipe for cheap and might need to source locally if possible... H-pipe and some K&N's...

    Idle Hesitation/Bog - '78 xs400

Went and got a screw driver, I guess I'll have to pull the carbs off again soon. I don't know if that boot would fit with even larger filters. [See pic.] they're almost running into the battery box as is. They're in line with the battery box so would need to kick out on an angle to clear...

    Idle Hesitation/Bog - '78 xs400

Tore my carbs apart and cleaned them thoroughly with carb cleaner. Set the timing to be fairly accurate and point gap is perfect. Valve clearances all within spec on the tighter side (quite quiet now, might have read my old posts on the valve train noise, has all but gone away now with valves in...

    Battery levels

Compared to original is much better and even some minor charging since has raised the levels to about equal across the line, 2 are still low by a few mm's but charging alone raise the levels as much as in the photo and more! I would loooove an explanation of the theory being this

    Battery levels

Funny thing, added no water but charged for a few hours and kept "topping up" the charge on tender and the levels are all right up to the bottom (min) fill line. I'll fill the rest with distilled water when I get the chance but, rebuilt the carbs, got the timing all sorted, readjusted valve...

    Timing / Gapping issues...

bump! similar issues over here, light stays on about 350 degrees of rotation. Ordered electronic ignition from Pamco Pete but 2 weeks of downtime is two too many. I've been hooking to left point and engine block or similar ground. Home rigged static light with all wiring insulated/isolated with...

    Pamco

Pete emailed me and cancelled my order. I ordered the HD model and will post the progress and some pics of the install later on, gonna be a week or two

    Pamco

Thanks brother good to know. Figured I only want to be in there rewiring once so spend the extra dough on it now. Doesn't look like you can just upgrade from basic e-ignition to adding in the e advance module later on like with the 650 for the difference in price...not so clear as the units look...

    Pamco

About 3 days ago but I ordered the basic setup without e-advance and was thinking that might not be the way to go (go with the e-advance instead!) so I wrote to correct my order before he shipped it and then go through the pains of sending it back etc etc...I can't afford to order both and send...

    Pamco

Anyone know if Pamco Pete i still around? I bought the electronic ignition for xs400 from his website and emailed him both on this forum and on the email he provides on his website and have heard nothing back. Just wondering if I should contact Paypal to cancel and seek a solution elsewhere...

    Battery levels

Time for new battery or can I just top 'er up with distilled water? Apparently <1 year old as of PO. All the levels are way different and around 1/2 full or so. Has died 3 times in the last week and a half due due to my cranking over and over while tinkering and not taking her out for a ride...
