    Replace chain Master Link?

I have the same bike as you. I purchased a parts unlimited chain. I believe 530 with 102 links. It's a decent chain and I didn't break the bank. I also replaced my sprockets at the same time. JT sprockets. Apparently it's a good idea to swap out your old for new while your replacing the chain...

Try electrolysis rust removal. My tank was nasty. I did this a few times but worked very well. YouTube has videos how to do it.

Wowzer! Those are some epic back and fourth opinions. Opinions...that's all they are boys. It's clear that your all passionate about your bikes and also passionate about riding. That's already been summed up. I'd just like to throw my hat into the ring as well. I am new to the "bike world"...

    1981 front drum brake cable

I couldn't for the life of me find a front brake cable for my 79 xs 400 (drum). Motion Pro (out of California), was able to custom build one for me. I sent them the original and they replicated it. $50 u.s. They also do all other cables.

    1979 XS400 sporadic shut down

Hey Kev. Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have more a lot more experience than me. But I've read an awful lot about carbs and similar issues to what your having. Apparently it's not uncommon to clean the carbs three times ensuring all those awesome micro holes are blown out with air...

    Centerstand hard to operate

Dave is spot on. I was clueless and almost hurting myself getting my bikes to stand properly. Lucky for me Dave came for a visit and showed me how to do this properly amongst other bike related issues. It's quite easy to do actually.

    help me decide !

Thanks xschris. I do plan on restoring the bike to its original state to the best of my ability. I'm not skilled enough nor have the knowledge to "chop" it. Plus. This bike will look awesome and hopefully ride awesome when all is said and done. I have lots of new replacement parts. Just have...

    help me decide !

Hey. Sorry for late reply. Just noticed the thread now. Congrats on having the bike home. How is the progress? My only thoughts are what I found to be the basics for the first step check list. 1) Give it a good look over and see what works and what doesn't. What's loose and what's missing...

    help me decide !

Hey Kloot. You have the same attitude I had when bought my first bikes back in July. Always wanted a bike and at 42 years old I finally got one. Well two actually. One was a "parts bike". Both for just over a grand. At the time I thought a decent deal, and I still do (optimist) and even though...

    Air Filter Foam PPI?

Hmm. That does make sense, however, this foam is oil free. I haven't used them yet as my bikes are in a rebuilding phase. Is the oil foam more of the concern or is it the density or make up of the filter itself? Thanks I did keep the receipt!

    Air Filter Foam PPI?

I bought a 9x21 sheet of No Toil air filter from a local bike shop. It can make x16 strips , which is plenty. Under $20 too!

New member here, 83 XS400 Maxim

REAL nice bike. as far as inline fuel filters go, their cheap. like 3-4 bones. you can get them in plastic or metal. they have a basic accordion like filter in them. Not sure if there is a Princess Auto in New York, but, usualy can pick up those filters in any auto parts store. and get new...

    83 Xs400k Maxim troubles

That's hilarious man. Poor Mickey. I checked my air filters as part of my slight dismantle of my bikes when I first got them. I didn't find any road kill, or mice but they were nasty. Replaced them with new air filter material.
