For Sale - 1978 Fenders, side covers, seat, signals & more to come

Updated list of items with photos: -mufflers-rusty but functional and could probably polish up to decent condition if you really put work into it. Baffles inside seemed to work in testing on my bike. -side covers with xs400 badges- would clean up nicely, no cracks. One of the badges broke off...

For Sale - 1978 Fenders, side covers, seat, signals & more to come

As the title states, I have these items and a few more from a U.S. spec 1978 XS 400 E. Pictures will be posted tomorrow. It's all in fairly solid condition (nothing is destroyed or broken), but if you are comfortable contacting me sight unseen that's fine too. Make me an offer on any of it, I'm...

    Manual petcock issues

arfstrom, I too use a paper filter (just a simple one from the lawnmower section of Menard's) that says it's rated for 30 microns. I have no idea how accurate that is or not in terms of sizing, but I can definitely see it picking up tons of red coloration while the bowls still get that super...

    Manual petcock issues

After running through everything, It's not perfect, but definitely better. There were no vacuum leaks around the boots or choke after testing with carb cleaner, and the internals in the carbs were all clean and in order. There was a bit of incredibly fine rust dust in the bowls of the carbs...

    Manual petcock issues

That boot vacuum port is plugged with a bolt in the hose, and maybe there's just something I'm missing. I'm going to get after it today and see if I can find out what exactly is the issue, probably run through the carbs and just make sure it's all clear. I think the issue might actually be a...

    Manual petcock issues

Hello again all, and I apologize for the wall of text, For reference, I'm working on a 1978 xs400E. After changing the exhaust to a more free flowing pair of slip ons from stock and to K&N pods on the stock H pipe, I rejetted +2 both pilots and mains to 47.5 and 147.5 on each, and also got new...

    Chicago?

I recognize that this thread is old, but has anyone found a place that does work on these bikes in the Chicagoland area? I'm really struggling with tuning and think a general check up would be smart as well.

    First XS400

Those tires are absolutely filthy. I saw Shinko but what model/sizing?

    Reading plugs?

Awesome, thanks for the help! Is the best option for leaning it out going to be a rejet or simply unscrewing the brass idle screws a bit?

    Reading plugs?

I have been running the bike for a week now, '78 XS400. Just put 30 miles on today and wanted to see what you all think of what these plugs might be indicating. I can't tell for the life of me whether they're running lean or ideal or what, it's just something I haven't picked up yet, and the...

    MJK's '78 Brat

I am attacking this differently than most build threads. We already finished the bike, but just want to give back to the community if we can after learning so much from this forum in the process, from tips and expertise to inspiration. My cousin and I are both 20 and in college, and he texted...

    Need for a Rear Hoop?

UPDATE: so we just kind of let it go as is. I have ridden maybe 25-30 miles on it as such, mostly flat streets, no aggressive turns or anything, some minor bumps here and there. The bike seems sturdy, tracks straight, all that good stuff. Plus I think it looks badass. So for the time being, I...

How to dry bleed master cylinder?

First and foremost, thanks to all who have commented on my two most recent threads. You have been awesome, and I hope my dumb questions and your answers have benefitted others besides myself. My question is straightforward: how do you dry bleed the rear brake on a '78 XS400? I disassembled and...

How to free seized brake piston?

UPDATE: I went and bought a lever grease gun at menards. On my way home, my cousin said he simply freed the piston by twisting it out with channel lock pliers and some patience (which I do not have). Cleaned it up with some CLR and a scotch brite pad and bled it, the rubbers were all in good...

How to free seized brake piston?

I imagine it was air in the hoses because I didn't see or hear a leak, and the hoses and mc are brand new. That being said, paying for a new piston and rings isn't the worst thing that could happen. I'm most interested in the grease gun option as it seems pretty straightforward. Do you have to...

How to free seized brake piston?

Grease gun sounds and differential heating sound like the best options. Is it normal though for the brake lever to not gain any "feel" when bleeding a frozen piston? I would've thought it would still be able to build the pressure needed to feel like a normal brake. After I get the piston out...

How to free seized brake piston?

While putting the finishing touches on what I consider a nice 1978 XS400 build, the front brake began giving me trouble and the piston is now firmly seized in the caliper assembly. The master cylinder is not the proximate issue (new HEL hoses and master cylinder rebuild kit), the piston is just...

Wanted - '78 XS400 front brake caliper assembly

Part number is 1L9-25810-03-00, is also on 1976-77 XS360 bikes as well from my understanding. Essentially the piece that houses the piston on the front brake, and the piston too. It has to work, but willing to pay what I consider a very fair amount and shipping.
