Considering transmission overhaul myself - terrible idea, or awesome idea?

Thanks for the info NewHavenMike! That is encourging and its helping me convince myself to do the the work. Yes, the engine will need a good cleaning and degreasing for sure. I have been putting off the compression test. Probably just trying to avoid more bad news, keep myself motvated. If...

Considering transmission overhaul myself - terrible idea, or awesome idea?

My names Phil. I'm the proud owner of an 81 XS400 which I love. I just picked up an 85 FJ600. Bought it non-running. I cleaned out the carbs and got all 4 cylinders firing. I thought everything was perfect until i put it in first and got nice cyclical click coming from the transmission. haha. I...

Fork Yoke Cover - How to remove? (grrrr, WTF)

I definitely get your point. Spec is Spec... But, I'm not sure it would be possible to use a socket style wrench on these bolts if you intend to keep the plate on. You have to slide the plate into place before the yoke and bolts are put on/in, if I'm not mistaken. In this case, i was doing a...

Fork Yoke Cover - How to remove? (grrrr, WTF)

I don't have a torque wrench. Plus they need an open end wrench. They were good and tight, and I put them back like that... had a test ride and checked they hadn't loosened. Anything else i should do?

Fork Yoke Cover - How to remove? (grrrr, WTF)

Yep had to go under them with an open wrench. Hard to crack them, but worked fine once I got the bolts moving. Thanks again!

Fork Yoke Cover - How to remove? (grrrr, WTF)

Thanks for the reply! Just get at the bolts on the yoke, to realign the forks a bit. I figured if I could just push it up a bit it would make the job much easier. I had imagined I would go at the bolts with a socket wrench, but maybe I need open or box end wrench under it? Is it actually...

Fork Yoke Cover - How to remove? (grrrr, WTF)

Please, someone, tell me how to remove this so I can get at the lower fork yoke bolts. Doesn't appear to be fastened by anything. But, after a good bunch of not so gentle wacking with a hammer buffered by wood, I'm getting nowhere. The manual I have is silent on this matter. Please help

How to fule while tuning polit screws and syncing?? & tuning advice?

I just ended up loosening the tank bolt and pivoting the back end up and propping it on the lid of a spray can. Just enough room to get at the screws with a bit in my fingers. Worked perfectly since the pins have little resistance. Thanks for the advice guys! I'll check out the guide XSLeo...

How to fule while tuning polit screws and syncing?? & tuning advice?

Just got my crabs cleaned and things are looking good. I am missing the tiny (1mm x 3mm) O-ring in one of the pilot screws but put it back together until I can get hold of one in the next few days. Its currently idling high/erratic, but I can imagine that is due in large part to the missing...

Idle problem (wont) after carb cleaning....

Thank you, this helped! Now I find that I'm missing a tiny washer from one of the pilot screws. Just need to get hold of that and then it will be on to tuning!!!

Idle problem (wont) after carb cleaning....

XS 400 special Looking for some help...very much an amateur but got up the nerve to clean my carbs. The bike seemed to be suffering from a blockage. I believe only the left side was firing. At first, it ran fine but it had no power, full throttle was a very slow acceleration. The get-up and go...

Front brakes wearing at an angle, to wedges.... No good?

Okay, went to check my front breaks yesterday and noticed they are wearing at an angle. See the diagram. They should wear flat no? (Im a noob) Ill change them out asap, but should something be done to correct it, or will simply reinstalling likely correct a botched job? Imagine i will get more...

Turn signal does not stay on

So is this just as simple as removing it, opening it up and giving it a clean?

Turn signal does not stay on

So what do you guys think? Sounds like the relay? Its been working fine for a few days, but want to be ready when it goes out again...

Turn signal does not stay on

The silliness continues. Today start the bike up cold and the blinkers are working fine. After the bike warms up they return to the behaviour described above. One characteristic I was thinking might help diagnose the problem. They are either working for a while, then not working for a while...

Turn signal does not stay on

Are there any simple tests I can perform to try and figure out whether it's the switch or the relay? It was working fine but then in the last few weeks started to go sketchy.
