    Clutch Adjustment

I usually lube all of the cables by removing the handlebar end attachment so the cable end is upright. Snip the corner of a baggie and tape it to the cable housing. Add a capfull of motor oil and let it run through the cable.

New to me '81 Special II

Get a petcock that you can shut off so you can run the gas out of the carbs completely for storage.

New to me '81 Special II

Top end is probably fine. Check the compression after running a few times. Bike looks good.

    manual petcock possible issue

Is there a screw with a spring between the carbs that is used to sync the throttle shafts? the screw or spring could be missing and one throttle may be loose from the other, not lock synched together.

    manual petcock possible issue

Does the throttle return all of the way to the idle stop screw when you let go? Try taking a .002 feeler gauge and see if it will slide between the head and the manifold flange. If the flange is warped, scour it with thinner, dry out, add Yamabond or Permatex ultra black. place a new gasket over...

    1980 XS400 Score!

The connector pipes are supposed to give top end a boost, at the expense of low end power. Hard to judge the jetting without going through the bike first. Definitely has an air leak at the manifold flanges, I can see gaps, and it was revving erratically at low speeds.

    Timing Cover Removal??

It's definitely a good investment to buy a good quality impact screwdriver ($30.00) and a small ball peen hammer for it. It will make case screw removal work every time without messing up the heads. Jap bikes use JAS standard screw heads, the angle of the Phillips slot in the head is different...

    1980 XS400 Score!

I took the pipes off and had them sandblasted. They are aftermarket, a bit loud. Looks to have built-in baffles, nonremovable, welded in. They were chrome but someone had painted them. I like the looks better than the stock ones. Havent checked the carbs to see if it was rejetted, but I would...

    Throttle Shaft Seal Replacement

I see them in the service manual, would imagine that they would be trash after carb spray hit them.

lost half of a valve split collar

I lost one also, it was the only small part out of many that I dropped or went flying across the garage that I never found. I brought two, still have the extra one. Lost many slide needle retainers, found them all.

    1980 XS400 Score!

I just picked up an XS, it is running, was registered. A little rough but a pretty decent bike. The clutch was slipping, I adjusted it properly but haven't tried it on the road yet, no plate. Hopefully, that was the cure. Besides that, it needs some electric starter work, it makes a rattling...
