    Carburator jet sizes for 81

The PO replaced the jets with a made in china kit and I want to rebuild with mikuni jets. I'm confused on the jet sizes as I have found conflicting information on different sites. Babbitts parts list says main jet is 160, 135 on another site and 142.5 in the Haynes manual. Need some help please...

    81 Restore part II

After cleaning up the engine, some painting and tons of elbow grease polishing the aluminum my son and I spent all day Sunday installing more parts. Started with the engine. Tried to mount it from the right side with not much clearance. Switched to the left side and it went right in. After we...

    81 XS400 RH Handlebar Switch...Brown??

Regarding your RH switch. I bought a new switch and had the same problem. I removed the wiring harness from the old one, cleaned it up and transplanted it into the new switch housing. Saved me from splicing and having the thing look bad. Take lots of pictures as a reference when doing this.

    After market mufflers

You might try MAC exhaust systems www.maxperformance.com. They have exhaust that fit xs400 bikes. I was going to buy a set until I found a decent OEM system from a member here.

    Engine enamel

I polished the aluminum parts on my engine. Lots of elbow grease. Since it was really oxidized I started sanding the aluminum with 250 grit, 320, 400, 600,800,1000, 1500 then used mothers aluminum polish using my drill and pads from Harbor Freight. Looks amazing. I finished it up with a...

Need the panhead screw that holds the tach cable in place on the cycl head. Damned if I didn't misplace it. Nothing I have fits, too small. It's number 6 on the diagram. Thanks

    '82 XS400R Seca refurbishment thread

Soak all the rusted parts in Evapo-Rust. The stuff is amazing at removing rust and its reusable many times. It's available through Amazon and some auto parts stores.

    81 Restore

Thanks, I have a custom paint shop that will be able to match the new ruby red using the nos side cover. I painted several cars in my earlier life and did my corvette twice so hopefully I'll be able to knock out the tank with time and patience. I painted the frame on my 400 and clear coated it...

    81 Restore

The tank has several gouges on the right side down to the primer so I will sand it down and prime it, etc, etc. I have a NOS side cover in new ruby red hoping I can get a color match from that. If not I'm going with Black Cherry which is very close to original.

    81 Restore

Thanks, that chrome piece on the tank was added by the PO. Its just chrome plastic from Auto Zone that will be gone when we paint the tank. The clutch assembly that I bought had the aluminum lever already on it, thought it came that way. I'll coat it with plasti-dip to match later and I'll...
