Moderate Project 1979, brake upgrade thoughts

Of the long video, my longish post, or the project in general? Will agree, both the video and my post could be trimmed a fair bit. Got ideas for several improvements to the XS, depending on how long it stays in my garage perhaps. If you're not interested in the coil improvements you probably...

Moderate Project 1979, brake upgrade thoughts

Got everything hooked up the other day and gave it a shot on one cylinder. Middling success honestly. The plan is to replace the coil primary winding with a fixed resistor that has switched battery voltage at one side, and goes to the ignition module on the low side. Measured at that low side...

Moderate Project 1979, brake upgrade thoughts

Weellll, some updates on the off chance anyone cares. Awhile back I changed the oil and filter and filled up with non-oxy gas. Also installed the new braided brake hose, lever is very hard instead of spongy now. Brake feel isn't amazing but stopping is very improved. Two or 3 days later it...

I'd guess you have excessive valve lash from using straight feelers. Probably a decent part of your poor running. You could bend just a couple of individual feelers to the correct angle and then not put them back in the stack, which is what I've done after a couple times through that job...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

11.4 to the field coil at rest isn't spectacular, but that should be enough to successfully power up the field coil when running. 12.4V fully charged isn't great, more like 12.7 just off the charger or 12.6 after sitting for a bit is better. Do you fully trust your multimeter and measurement...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

First things first then is to get it charged up before continuing to test, otherwise you can chase your tail quite a bit. A trickle charger on the battery whenever you're not taking readings can help a bit, or even a second battery in parallel to the one in the bike. Within reason higher...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

Yep, you're right. Just looked it up in the manual out in the garage. I was maaaaaybe thinking of the stator branch resistance, but learned my lesson about not checking. Edited my response above. I'd check the field coil supply voltage, maybe key on and also running. Have you done the AC volts...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

EDIT: 4 ohms is correct. Did you try the internal resistance compensation trick from above? Also make sure you're using appropriate resistance ranges on the meter. Lots of them you have to have a good idea what the max reading could be. For instance the one I was using yesterday has 200, 2k, 20k...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

Ahhhh, boo. Not a good sign. I'd perhaps try with another multimeter to be sure, and maybe take readings while twisting and flopping the lead around to see if there's possibly just a bad wire. It's a decent job to replace, and some extra hassle if you try to repair it instead.

When the carbs are out and the floats have been causing problems I like to try to try the "flop test" just before putting them in. Attach some clean vinyl tubing to the fuel inlet and then blow into the tubing. Simultaneously turn the carbs upside down so gravity pushes the float valves shut...

    XS400 1980 not charging battery

Looking at my schematic the brown wire to the field coil (which changes to black) is fused power, the green from the coil to the regulator would be "low". The regulator has 3 wires: the same brown high side as supplies the field coil (and a bunch of other functions), the green from the coil, and...

Ahhh, always something. Hope the XS and the Ural are relatively okay after that mishap.

Introduction and Advice Needed, for 83 maxim XS400

Looks like excellent progress Nat X. Little trick I picked up for painting wheels is to buy a stack of 3x5 note cards. My local dollar store has them for...umm...one dollar. Those wedge into the gap between the rim and the tire pretty well, and you can save a bunch of time over the paper and...

HELP - Right cylinder not advancing...

Hi Alexander, Did you verify lack of advance with a timing light and see that the flash didn't leave the timing marks? I just recently checked a SOHC, assuming the process is similar for a DOHC. "Checked the pickups" is a little vague, is there a resistance spec that you measured? Perhaps some...

Sold / Found / Inactive - Hard bags, sissy bar, and crash bars for a Special in Minneapolis

The two silver rail pieces appear to attach to the upper shock mounting studs and then to probably the holes below the turn signal stalk holes. Then the back rest mounts to both of those. The hard bags attach at the passenger peg mounting points and then at the turn signal stalk mounts...

Hi SoulMan, Took a few more pictures out in the garage, uploaded to my flickr album for the XS: https://www.flickr.com/photos/35465757@N05/albums/72157714124790748 Hopefully that takes you there. I vaguely remembered the turn signals had to come off and were built into the hard bags instead...

Sold / Found / Inactive - Hard bags, sissy bar, and crash bars for a Special in Minneapolis

Oooh, I'd have to dig them out and mock up how the went on. Only briefly saw the rear rest and hard bags.on the bike. I do know there are special studs still on there for the upper shock mounts. Got another forum member looking for the regular bolts, the studs are required for mounting, but I...

Sold / Found / Inactive - Hard bags, sissy bar, and crash bars for a Special in Minneapolis

Hi SoulMan, Yes, they're available. A pox on Yamaha for their multitude of overlapping models, but I believe the donor is the "XS 400SG 3F9" from this page: http://xs400.net/wb/pages/ueber-die-xs400/xs-400-modelle.php Would love if someone took them off my hands. Garage is pretty tight, I'm...
