    New guy, new build

New upholstery on seat. I added a layer of foam under the fabric area hoping to add a bit more padding.

Does this sound right to you?

Check the headers for temperature with a heat gun if you have one. Or use your hands checking from a cold start. That engine sounded really weak and could be running on just one cylinder. Pull the plugs and look at them, that can tell you a lot too. I forgot to put a plug cap back on once...

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

The way I understand it anything that reduces pressure drop from beginning to end makes it run leaner. So hard to say what your filter change did however many here feel that it's best to leave the intakes stock, apparently these carbs like the even flow that comes out of the stock set up. And...

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

If it was running good stock I'd find out what jets were in there and start by going up 1 size. There's some pretty good writeups where you can buy the jets. https://www.jetsrus.com/FAQs/FAQ_rejetting_101_how_to_rejet.htm http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm It helps a lot to mark your...

    Needle position question 78 XS400

Clarification. Baffle is capped and sealed except for the gap provided by the U clips.

    Needle position question 78 XS400

The plugs were darker brown before I dropped the needle. The headers are stock. The cones are hollow with a screw in baffle that can be removed for modifying as needed. The baffles right now have no slots like you see in the photo, the only escape for exhaust is the gap between the muffler...

    Needle position question 78 XS400

I'm okay with a little rich, I think it's better than a little lean? I also have been close to your recommended 285 degrees F measured near the plug after a ride, the left side 5-10 degrees warmer than the right. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

    Needle position question 78 XS400

Here are the plugs with the current settings, left and right cylinders. Left has always seemed to run a bit hotter than the right. FWIW it starts good hot or cold, runs good from idle to red line across the entire throttle range.

    Needle position question 78 XS400

So I dropped the needle to the lowest point. It largely takes care of the falter from 5000-7000 rpm at WOT and didn't cause any other new issues. Plugs are a nice brown/tan color. Idles OK. In summary I've got, stock air boxes and filters, +2 on sizes on pilots and mains, 4 turns out on fuel...

    Needle position question 78 XS400

Are you suggesting I raise the needle or just stating the direction the change provides?

    Carb Pilot Jet Stuck

The piece I see that's all chewed up are just the covers to the pilot jets. Don't drill too far past them or you'll get into the jet itself, the covers are just short screws with a metal gasket under them. They are maybe 8-10 mm in length overall. I'd take a thin cut off wheel and try to make...

    Needle position question 78 XS400

I'm re-jetting due to and exhaust change, still running stock air box and filters. I've gone up 2 sizes on both pilot and main and so far dropped the needle one groove. It runs good across all throttle positions and through all rpms except in the 5000-7000 rpm range at WOT where it falters a...

What series pilot jet for 78 XS400?

xschris you are the best! Thanks for the link. The jets I found in the carbs that I assume are stock (bike appeared to be mostly stock as purchased) were 42.5 but they have no holes in the body, the link you sent says there are 6. How big a deal are the holes?

What series pilot jet for 78 XS400?

I see the manual has the stock pilots at 42.5, which mine have printed on them. I need to go up a size or two so I got some VM22 47.5 pilots from Jets R Us and I'm pretty sure I ordered the wrong style. They fit but I went way rich and I can see the orifice is much larger than stock, more...

82 xs400r seca rear wheel wobble

Make sure to break the bead loose all the way around before you add the tire lube. Bouncing it on the floor can help set it. I agree taking it for a ride can help by warming it up. A hot water bath followed by tire lube can warm it up. Beating the bead area with a rubber mallet. I've had...

    xs400d

If you want an H4 halogen the Emgo kit that includes a new bucket worked for me. You might have to switch something else over to LED to have enough power run it tho. The stock brake/run lights are about 20w so switching those to LED should give you enough power to run a 55/60w head light.

    First Bike!

I learned from this link. https://www.jetsrus.com/FAQs/FAQ_rejetting_101_how_to_rejet.htm And also a lot here, especially good info about how the circuit functions overlap. http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm

    Rear shocks

If you are going to have it powder coated they usually do have a prep process they like that's part of the powder coating process. There are thousands of finishes available including ones that are rough or crinkly. Having just painted a frame myself I'd consider going to a powder coater for a...

    Rear shocks

They come with a variety of possibilities via bushings. I had to move things around a bit but everything I needed was in the package. I think went without a metal bushing on the bottom and with one of the packaged bushings on the top. I had just powder coated the frame and recall the top...
