    yet another problems thread

I decided to start a new thread because the previous posts on my last thread were a bit misleading- So my bike would at first start to die when I put it in gear and would have to feather the throttle to keep it alive (would idle fine in neutral). Furthermore, I would have to rev super high to...

    what could have happened?

My xs400 was running perfectly fine and then just one day it started bogging every now and then. I replaced the fuel filter because it was super gunked and then added clamps and it seems that the fuel isn't running quite as freely as it was before, so I am planning on just putting a straight...

Lights switch and kill switch both won't work

I have a weird wiring job going on. As you can see, there are the lights, the brown wire from the voltage reg, the black stator wire, the coils all on one side of the killswitch and a fuse on the other going to the battery positive. The problem that I'm facing is that 1) I can't kill the bike...

    frame diameter help?

I have an xs400 81 SOHC and was wondering which bolt on peg diameter I should buy. The original passenger peg mounts have been chopped off, but the frame is still an xs400 frame. i have the option of choosing 1",1 1/8", and 1 1/4". I'm not exactly sure, but I think it should be 1"?

what is the plastic knob over the carb sync nipple called?

I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it is the thing that closes the carb sync vacuum nipples. It is the thing you have to take off in order to put the hoses into the intake manifold in order to carb sync. Previous owner must have lost it so I bought a new intake manifold set but they...

    float height

I'm trying to adjust my float height on a 81 heritage xs400 (SOHC) Which tab am i supposed to fool around with to get back to normal? There is tab that is right above the float pin that I have screwed around with and now the minimum float height is much higher. Furthermore, the brass tang for...

would this easy valve adjustment procedure work for an xs400?

I thought I might share this for anyone out there having a hard time with their valve adjustment- I plan on using it myself in about 2 weeks and reporting back : ) apparently it works for non hydraulic valve designs and it seems like it should work for an xs400. This would work on SOHC models...

    Charging system.. again

So I have bought a new regulator and new rectifier. REGULATOR- I tried the tests for 12v on the regulator wires (brown green and indirectly black) and those were good but the resistance between the brown and green wires were 500ohms on my new one and about 1,200ohms on my old one. (the manual...

How to replace the stator & Manuals

I can't find anything on the Haynes or Yamaha service manuals and was wondering how I would replace a stator. I am willing to buy the Chilton/Clymer manual if they have information on this and was wondering if anyone knew if they had info on changing the stator. (I have an SOHC 1981) I also...

    DIY Manometer with no drill

I want to make the snapple bottle manometer but I have no drill- i understand that pressure is quite important for this process and wanted to know if anyone had a cheap(less than $50) manometer that they'd recommend(the ones on amazon looked iffy) or if anyone had suggestions on how to make the...

accidentally cut a wire on my cdi should i replace it?

I was trying to get a superglued battery out of a battery box. However, the cdi was right next to it and i cut the green/white wire on my cdi. I was planning on just mashing them together and putting some electrical tape over it or buying a wire connector(the crappy plastic ones). would this be...

    Regulator Rectifier Stator

I own an SOHC XS400 as of today ! when wired to a new battery this thing runs beautifully but it wont charge the old battery. Thus I figured that I would try to replace the Regulator and Rectifier (which were cheap on ebay) and then replace the stator/alternator. However, this bike has a weird...
