So I am back here as I have got into thinking it was ignition related and I replaced coils, spark plug wires, caps, points, condensor, and still had issues - then I took carbs apart again and found one diaphragm unsealed - so I did not need those electrical components and in a way it was a waste...

I did see one on YouTube that was not quieter but i would have thought the mixing of the two pulses would smooth and quiet things but i guess there also to fact that there one muffler rather that two which would logically not help noise wise....stock mufflers are hard to find and i am not sure...

Well NewHaven Mike and XS Chris I did test coils one was out of spec. I got some high quality Emgo (Made in Taiwan, not mainland China like the ones Mikes sells) coils, new plug wires, new NGK plug caps, new Japanese made (Daichi) points and an NOS condensor - installed all, have timing...

I did end up replacing coils, wires, spark plug caps, point and condenser - I still have a high rpm miss.....

For anyone interested in this thread still I did end up using the Emgo coils they worked and fit and hooked up perfectly

Emgo 24-72404 coil is indeed compatible even though not adverised as such - I bought 2 and installed - they work and very easy to wire as had correct male / female connections to fit right up at least to my bike (77 XS 400). I really like Emgo as they are Made in Taiwan, not Mainland China, and...
