    1980 XS850 Midnight Special

My brother rode my XS400 and fell in love with something bigger than his 2006 Honda Big Ruckus 250, and finally pulled the trigger on this beaut. It's at the shop now getting rigged up for the season alongside my other project, the 1981 Kawasaki 440LTD. Mine is getting a carb rebuild, and new...

Introduction and Advice Needed, for 83 maxim XS400

order parts is so key! I'm building a minibike right now and I've been stocking up on online parts orders during the quarantines. I have no idea if that style of choke would work for you but I expect you'll get an answer from a senior forum member in short order. Best of luck on the remaining...

    Xs400j problems

I'm wondering if the stalling while driving issue is more of an electrical issue. I'm stumped as well, I have no idea as I'm very new to this but it sounds like you've eliminated the possibility of it being a fuel supply issue. I honestly do not know where to go from there, I would try checking...

    Kawasaki 440 LTD thoughts?

well i went against @sipma02 advice and got the bike. Not sure what i'm in for. It's VERY clean (Surprisingly so) but appears to be flush out of oil. Clutch isn't functioning properly, I can't shift it out of neutral. Everything else is gorgeous, tank clean carbs clean new seat etc. PO did the...

    Xs400j problems

cool looking bike, unique front load saddle bag there too. Wondering if perhaps there is a fuel supply issue from the petcock if fuel can only flow from prime position. I would first replace the gas lines, install an inline fuel filter, remove the petcock assembly and inspect those elements...

    Xs400j problems

Does anyone have any thoughts on a DOHC being topped up periodically (say, driven daily and then tossed on a NOCO trickle charger overnight once every two weeks) if only using it for short commutes? I think it would be a good idea and easy enough to do if you aren't really ripping the bike...

hey folks new to the site!!

welcome to the site, I also have an 83 and couldn't believe how hard it was to get the carbs off! I was in the garage for way too long, considering it's only 4 bolts and then the air box! Does Yamaha have some special tool for this? Normal Allen wrenches are way too big for that job.

    Kawasaki 440 LTD thoughts?

Hi everyone I have the opportunity to get a 1983 Kawasaki 440 LTD, with no cash out of my pocket (I'm able to make a few trades). I'm seriously considering the offer. The bike was in good running condition 3 years ago when it was put away. Has about 20,000 original km, and has not been...

    Will this oil work

Well cold weather to me is pretty damn cold, I live on the prairies in Canada. I know there are some areas with a 12 month riding season in the states, we aren't even close to that here. I guess the reason for including that info in my previous message is that I wasn't sure how the weight of the...

    Will this oil work

See photo. Search results on this forum resulted in nothing, for oil rated API CK-4. I got 6 quarts at $4CAD each, seemed like a good deal, I can return it if it isn’t a good deal. Is this okay for the xs400 DOCH? Any help in the right direction to better understand what is necessary for oil...

    Help finding the "beginners" thread?

Hi All, first, my apologies (yes I have tried the search function to no avail) I recall seeing on this site, a while back, a specific thread targeted towards new bike owners and first time riders. I have the DOHC Maxim, I'm familiar with how to find the service manual on this site, but the one...

Crazy thought - running two batteries

Damn Leo thank you! All great advice. I'm 100% following what you're saying about the fuses, thanks for making that so clear. That electrical stuff is my biggest concern. After that, most stuff is good except I would consider setting the valve clearance and then doing general preventative...

Crazy thought - running two batteries

Thank you for the detailed reply Leo! @XSLeo I realized over the weekend my summary above was nonsense. I was able to dive into the bike a bit more, and as you mentioned, I have a much better understanding of it now. I took apart the left hand controls and cleaned the entire unit. I then...

    Sold / Found / Inactive - 1983 DOHC - Dallas, Tx - $1800

That shit is a great bike. If I did all that work, I'd be asking $2,200 as well man. But do that exhaust man! It's literally the missing piece!!!! It's the only thing you haven't done!!!! Looks so good!

    Strange coughing sound and centrestand

glad to hear some of the issues are sorted! and WOW that is a great looking bike, enjoy! I'm not sure about the gas issue. Entirely possible, but someone with a SOHC would be better suited to answer that (mine is DOHC). I have the same rims as you, on my second bike. Love the sparkly paint...

Newbie, getting destroyed by basic stuff.

Hey @XSLeo , i finally got around to checking the ground on my signal and you were right. It was connected to the wrong post, one that was fully covered in paint. I switched it. Also found that a fuse had been knocked loose in the fuse box so fixed that as well. Then, only the left signal light...
