    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

That is exactly the same one I ordered. Let me know if it works when you get it connected!

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

Thanks. I have the original regulator and rectifier as well, but don't need a TCI because I run points. I'll figure it all out, just trying to minimize wiring etc

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

Really wish more people would chime in here. I've exhausted myself trying to research the topic and I've really not found any answers! I have scoured this site, and Google and really can't find a conclusion. With this covid outbreak, I can't even access a reg/rec for the sohc, so I'm trying to...

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

Reading electrical schematics based on the other models listed on the compatibility of that reg/rec, and they all show 12v switched on the brown, going to the green at the field coil, not 12v going to ground listed on dohc 400s.. REALLY confused on this one.

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

So I was looking at a wiring diagram, and I noticed that the red/black, and the blue wire go to the instrument panel. Are those redundant if I don't have a dash?

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

I should also mention this bike is being wired from scratch

    ANOTHER reg/rec thread

I've been searching endlessly about the topic, and can't find the info I'm looking for. I've found various units on amazon and I'm wondering if the DOHC unit will work for a 79 points model? It has the 3 whites, red, brown, green, and black wires.

They are decent. Both there but cracked on the forward screw hole

    For Sale - 79 xs400 parts

I have everything minus the motor and carbs. The H pipe is still there and the seat as well, just not pictured. No regi/title obviously, and unfortunately you pay shipping. The right hand signals are both broken and there is a dent in the tank. I have keys that are different for the tank and the...

    Front sprocket

My rear tire is a 140/70-18. I'm sure the motor has a 16t front, but I can confirm that on Saturday. As for rear blanks, I can't find anything smaller than a 38t. My goal is to have a good all around bike, but this summer I'll be doing more highway than anything. (5000 km trip coming up). Should...

    Front sprocket

So would you suggest a steel sprocket then? Aluminum wouldn't be good for long term? I'm building this bike for a 5000km trip this summer, so I need it to last. The only steel blank sprocket I could find was a 38t. Would that work with the stock 16 front?

    Front sprocket

That's Xschris! I found a site that makes custom aluminum sprockets, so I can get one made in 530 for the rear.

    Front sprocket

The build is going already, hence why I'm ironing out details. I know I'll have to modify the frame slightly for exhaust ports to clear. I got my hands on a full running xs400 with no regi, so everything I don't need will be going up for sale!

    Front sprocket

The only reason being it seems to be easier to find a front 428 to match the 428 rear, rather than the other way around. If you recommend sticking with the 530, then I could just get a blank 530 rear sprocket and have it custom milled to match my specs for the rear (center bore, bolt spacing)

    Front sprocket

Sounds good! I haven't found anything when it comes to replacing the sprocket with a 428 though. I may have found a 530 rear sprocket that will work, but I'm going to wait until I have the actual motor to make the final decisions

    Front sprocket

Alright, my custom project is proving to be a bit more difficult than I anticipated! My rear sprocket is from a lesser known brand, and I'm trying to find a matching sprocket. It is currently a 39t 428. I'm wondering if I can convert the drive sprocket on the motor to be a 428? If not, I'll...

    TCI to points

Is there anyone else to chime in? Just wondering if my cheapest option is to do a points conversion? I'm trying to keep the wiring as basic as possible, and keep it simple and clean. I'm not scared of mechanics at all, so adjusting points etc doesn't bother me. Just want some real world...

    TCI to points

Thank Mike! I DO NOT have an ignition at all, hence my search. I'm building this into a frame I had in my shop, so the wiring will be done from scratch as well. Any recommendations on coils? I have nothing but the motor and carb assembly to work with, everything else will be bought new.

    TCI to points

Thanks for that reply! From what I was reading on other threads, the Pamco E-advance was a direct replacement for a TCI, but I could have read wrong. It would be nice to find something that would replace the old ignition unit, but I know it's hard to find for the 400. Maybe I will just try my...
