    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

Cool thanks. Unrelated to the topic but one of these days I’d like to take this thing from Colorado to California. What I’m concerned the most about is how modified my exhaust is and if it would hinder engine health after a really really long ride. IE valves like you mentioned earlier or...

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

Interesting, here’s a photo of what I’ve done. The muffler itself has some restricting properties but I’ve added to that. You can see the original diameter on the outside of the washer, it’s like that throughout the entire baffling of the muffler. Of course there’s no substitute to seeing the...

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

They are not stock, the foam was deteriorating after sitting outside in the Colorado mountains for a few years so I changed them for open cell foam.

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

There’s the same if not more more flow from the ends of these mufflers with the washers than the stock ones. Will keep that in mind, thanks for the tip.

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

So these pipes have been too loud for me so I shoved two washers in the ends of them which gave me some more back pressure which gave me a better mix. Sorry for the radio silence but this is my solution for now

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m not sure what were the stock sizes but I’ll be pulling the carbs to do some work anyways so I’ll check then. Consensus says go up a size pilot and main with a name brand jet and go from there. The article on jetsrus says to start with the pilot jet then move...

    Shorty Exhaust Re-Jet Question

Hi everyone! I just got a pair of eBay shorty mufflers (emco knockoffs) on my 1978 XS400 and I’m having issues getting the mixture in tune. I found a thread here about which way to turn the mixture screws and it is helping so I think I have that right. When I had stock mufflers I had the mixture...

Doing some more research I’ve heard about the diodes, thanks for the how to! Also love the build, nice color choice!

Turn signals not working with new relay

That’s interesting, I’ll give it a go. Which two of the three pins should I use?

Turn signals not working with new relay

I thought I was clear, let me clarify. Bike had only front turn signals, got some non original incandescent rear ones, didn’t work as lights just stayed on, tried new relay, didn’t work as lights don’t come on, tried new thermal unit, didn’t work as lights don’t come on.

Turn signals not working with new relay

I’ve been trying to get my 1978 XS400 back on the road for some time now. Mechanically it’s sound but the problem now is turn signals. I bought the bike with only the front ones and when I hit the signal indicator they just stayed on. No big deal, got some new ones for the rear. Not stock but...

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

No I didn’t, I’m assuming that’s a gasket material. It doesn’t leak atm but I’ll keep it in mind.

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

I wouldn’t be surprised if the rocker was knocking it like it was. The clearances are in spec so I won’t worry about it for now. I could probably use some fine grit sandpaper between the screw tip and the valve (with a towel to soak up any metal fragments) if that were the case but it’s a story...

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

The nut is just to the left of the valve, got it all back together and it’s running as it should

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

Update, I think this is the problem

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

Ouch, straight forward fix but an in depth one. One thing I forgot to mention is the when I first got the bike running it would tap intermediately once in a while but not this loud.

    Left Cylinder Intermittent Firing Issue

78 XS400 Right Cylinder Excessive Tapping Noise

Hi everyone! I took my 1978 XS400 out today. All of a sudden it started making a terrible loud tapping noise and it sounds like it’s coming from the right exhaust valve (sorry for no video, I didn’t want to risk harming the engine). Of course my first thought is the nut worked itself loose and...

    Left Cylinder Intermittent Firing Issue

So I checked the clearances on all the valves, the left exhaust was off. Of course I adjusted all of them but the bike sounds sooooo much better now! A heck of a lot less backfiring and the plug aren’t blackened (I guess the mixture did help but I still need to go through them). I haven’t gotten...
