    Oil and clutch questions

First, you had in there what sounds like auto engine oil. That's not compatible with your clutch plates. If you ran it some with this oil, the clutch plates have been saturated with it. You should have had Valvoline Blue Premium 15W40 Diesel grade oil. Then you put in the Lucus additive with the...

Where can i get red blinker lenses?

Mikesxs has them. Scroll down and you will see them. http://www.mikesxs.net/products-31.html#products However, IMHO, amber color is safer. Most folks look for amber for turn signals. I don't like the use of red as found on some newer vehicles. Anything confusing to other vehicles may be a...

    Head Lamp

I put one in my '80 headlight bucket and my son put one in his '81. The new design reflector and a good quality H4 bulb - I use SilverStar Ultra - will give superior lighting. Your original 3-prong plug will connect directly to the 3 prongs of the H4 bulb. Install two good LED stop/tail bulbs...

    Head Lamp

And you have what year XS400? Also, do a search for "candlepower" headlight replacement reflectors. Much better than using an old style sealed bean unit.

    Smoke Gets In Your Eyes!!!

Remember, you have carbs, not fuel injection, so a partially warmed engine off choke may still not be up to normal idle speed as when fully warmed up. Did you adjust the idle speed screw to raise idle up a little? Side note: Even though factory specs call for 1200 rpm, you can safely idle at...

How do you tune without a tacho

If you are just asking about idle speed, you can set that by ear. Not too high, not too low and you will be fine. No real magic to it and the factory recommended 1200 rpm is really only a reference point.

    HID headlight conversion

Pseudo, Your conversion is a work or art. Great job. For others wanting headlight upgrade w/o going to HIDs: We have had this discussion before. An easy and effective way is to purchase the "Candlepower" conversion reflector (http://store.candlepower.com/ca631quheleu.html) in the original...

Strange carb jetting in new bike

AFAIK, you should always turn out the idle air mix screws to 3-3.5 turns out. Just too lean from the factory. Don't know if factory settings were different for Canadian delivered bikes, though. Keep us posted. Your plans for fly-by-wire controls are intriguing. Would that be safe on a 2-wheeled...

    pilot screw

Here in the U.S. there was a metal plug installed over the screw so owners couldn't mess with the very lean factory setting. Probably used in other countries as well but I am only familiar with the U.S. bikes. If the plugs are in the carbs, we drill them out to have access to the idle fuel mix...

Clutch Always Out of Adjustment When Engine Cold

Thoroughly warm up the engine. Drain that oil and also clean out or replace the oil filter. Car engine oils, other than a few special types such as diesel grade, should not be used in wet clutches. They can cause the clutch to drag more than usual. As Iha said, get yourself some diesel grade...

    Sparkplug wire woes...

mikesxs has the ignition wires. If your plug cap does not have the screw stud sticking up inside it, buy a new set. In fact, if the boots are old, buy a new set anyway as the resistors in the caps go bad. Buy a 5 ohm set of NGK plug caps.
