Setting the timing on my 81

bcware, I took your suggestion and played with the carbs some more. I went to a bigger main, got a way bigger flat spot, so I went back to a 150 and a slightly larger pilot than what was in it and it got better. I set the jet needle to the highest (bottom clip) and it got worse. Move it down...

Setting the timing on my 81

Well the mains are 155 I think. Pilots are two over. I played with several combo of jets starting with single over mains and pilot and different needle positions, but while increasing performance at low and midrange I have always had that dead spot. I'd like to check the base timing just to make...

Setting the timing on my 81

Open pipes, pod filters, oversize jets. It pulls really well up to that rpm and will rev with no load just fine. In fact it runs and pulls perfect for most of my riding but the OCD in me wants to iron that last problem out.

Setting the timing on my 81

So, I have a couple of questions regarding timing. It was suggested to me in another thread that the flat spot I am getting at higher rpm under load (5-6000 rpm) could be timing related, rather than carb. So, I'd like to check my timing. I read the manual and I guess all I can basically do...

    Flat spot BS34

My ignition is electronic so advance is controlled by the ignitor box, is it not? I did check the static timing awhile back and it was ok but I'll check it again.

    Flat spot BS34

Question about a flat spot I am getting. When accelerating hard, I get plenty of jam up to I'd say 5-6000 rpm (no tach so just an educated guess). Suddenly it acts like it is starting to run out of fuel. I am not getting a flat spot when the throttle is wide open no matter the rpm, but instead...

    Carb troubles

-The carbs have to be REALLY clean to run properly, not just a squirt of carb cleaner, but completely disassembled and every port cleaned. -Check the rubber diaphragms in the top of the carbs for holes. -Make sure the mixture needle orings are actually there. -Make sure your intake boots...

Sounds pretty good for straight pipes

It seems to. It is no substitute for a muffler but it'll take the edge off. I just used a couple of large washers with about 1/2" hole and a couple of bolts welded to them and some thumb nuts. Seems to work. Easy to do and if you don't like it it costs about 25c

Anyone ever replaced the 10.5 ohm resistor in the voltage regulator?

You can buy a proper plug for the VR125. I think it is S573, it plugs right in. Might want to put a zip tie around the plug just to make sure it doesn't vibrate out.

Sounds pretty good for straight pipes

Suggestion on the noise, keep the straight pipes and put "lollipops" in the pipes for baffles. Then you can tune them easily, you'll get a bit of back pressure and it'll prevent the popping on deceleration. I put a set on mine and you can get it quite quiet. I like mine obnoxious but put them...

    Music in your Garage

Depending on my mood the usual suspects are Matt Mays, lots of heavy stuff like Motorhead, old Metallica, Tool and SOAD, Beastie Boys, Mumford and Sons, even Patty Griffin, and sometimes an 80's playlist with Depeche Mode, Petshop Boys, and a bunch of the one hit wonders from back in the day...

How to make an LED voltage indicator.

post a pic when you get it mounted. Given the electrics on this bike it is nice to have info on the state of the charging system. I have a gauge on my bike but it doesnt like the vibrations too much

    Mishap with a hammer!

I saw a good article on the web somewhere that showed how to repair a float mount. It used a pin to reenforce the leg. Maybe i you googled you might find it.

Carb's...keep them standard or upgrade????? advice please

As long as the BS34 is cleaned properly and a filter installed, I cannot see any reason to change them. Parts are readily available if needed. They work very well once set up. As for the diaphram, if they are not leaking now, I wouldnt worry about it. The carbs on these bikes are not a...

    No spark,don't know why?

My spark went away one time and I eventually traced it to a terminal on the CDI. It had pushed back through when the plug was pushed into the ignitor box so it looked ok but it was just out of reach of the terminal. Took me 8 hours to find that @&*%%^! I was happy when I found it though...

    Greetings from Calgary!

Hey fellow Canadian. Welcome. If you need parts there is a great Canadian supplier called Sirius Consolidated. I usually just email Chris and he sends me the links to the right parts on his website. Don't be too scared of the carbs. They problably need a good cleaning, and you could...
