    Xs400 SE plain bearing

The digit is on the flat machined side of the connecting rod right above where it mates with the cap. Mine were worn and hard to read.

    Difference between part # prefixes?

Not sure about why the part prefixes are different. I had no trouble buying the exact bearings for my 81 direct from Yamaha using the chart above and the formula from the manual. The part numbers were exact. I double checked with platigauge to make sure the new bearings were right. New Haven...

Great work. How is that carb setup working for you? Anything you would do differently now that you have it together?

Working on the forks now. Springs are perfectly equal length of 498mm, which might be worn down from the stock 502mm, but the spring cross section is also slightly thicker than another pair I have of 500mm.

    Cleaning off baked-on gaskets

Put on your favourite album, grab a beer, and sit down. Cleaning off this liquid gasket from a valve cover took me an hour of careful scraping with a box cutter blade. Try to span across the surface with the whole blade all the time to ensure it does not bite into the aluminum. Still needs...

    Weekend(s) Task?: Splitting the Crankcase

In my opinion, it's a fairly involved task that mainly requires patience to do well, especially scraping away the old gasket material. You could do it in a weekend if you have all the parts at hand, and everything cooperates.

    Damage to upper crankcase half.

Perhaps the original casting was flawed at that point. However the steel insert in the jugs fit inside this opening, so there probably is no negative consequence. Just an opinion.
