    TCI questions

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same. My 1978 xs400 and my friends 1974 cb360 shared many identical ignition components.

Won't rev over 5000 rpm and how to test solid state reg

I just set mine via static timing and it runs great. The lip might cause an issue, but you'd have to test another filter to know for sure. Not many people opt for Uni filters because they are relatively expensive (which means less knowledge on the board here). I will say that the Mikesxs K&N...

'81 XS400 bike died, motor filled with gas, now what?

No Jeep forums for me! It is possible for carbs to flood with no obvious cause. I have had it happen a few times on motorcycles, snow blowers, etc. After opening the offending carbs there was no apparent cause yet the floats must have become stuck leading to the flooding. I ended up installing...

    Help Selecting New Intake Boots

They look fine to me; you just might want to shop around and see if it is the best price.

    Annoying Electrical Issues

I won't be terribly helpful, but I don't think you can "dump off" exactly the amount of extra voltage the charging system should be supplying; I would imagine if you have some kind of short you'd simply get rapid and violent discharge of the battery. The coils "look" clean? Are you basing their...

'81 XS400 bike died, motor filled with gas, now what?

First off, the gas in the oil is bad, but if it only ran for a short time you may be fine. I have killed a snowblower engine by thinning the oil with gas (flooding) but it ran for quite a while and eventually started knocking very loudly; then it stopped suddenly and basically blew up. It...

does it matter wich coil is left and right

They are both identical, they just need to be plugged into the correct side or they will fire at the wrong time.

    First gear stripped?

I don't think you can see the dogs by removing the side case cover; I think that requires splitting the case. You could check out the clutch basket and the friction discs though. It does sound like the dogs, however, if it is machine gunning consistently.

    First gear stripped?

I would crack it open; just grab a replacement gasket before you dive in.

    A master link issue

The clip link is fine for safety on a small bike, but if you insist on a rivet style that is fine. Most manufacturers offer a clip and river style master link for every chain they sell; you might have to contact them, however. The only exception would be some no-name brand of course.

What did you do with your XS today?

The original plastic fender actually recedes into the frame of the bike; if you remove that plastic fender and try to make a seat flat on the frame rails it will rub with stock suspension.

    Speed

If the timing is off it could reduce power, yes, but I think your bike likely has electronic ignition if I am not mistaken. Correct me if I am wrong.

    RobbyD's 78 xs400 cafe build

Shinkos are fine; I run them when I can on any vehicle I have. I put a set on my GSX-R 750 (135 bhp) without issues; I've never seen real proof of any lower quality issues. Most tire models they sell have great reviews online as well. Most people who trash certain brands of tires either have no...

    Speedometer/Top Speed on DOHC

Indeed, these bikes are not well suited for longer highway rides. Once you get above 65 mph or so you'll tend to experience harsher vibrations because the engine needs to work hard to stay there. Going over the "happy zone" of 6,000 or 7,000 rpms is fine for shorter rides though; I wouldn't...

    First gear stripped?

Good call Chris, the chain adjustment can have a large effect; that extra slop on a loose chain does screw things up.

    First gear stripped?

I agree. I don't think you'd be riding in first gear at all if the teeth were gone; it wouldn't matter if you feathered it or not off the line. If your clutch is that badly out of adjustment you may have simply forced the transmission to shift "clutchless" this can definitely cause some alarming...

    Speedometer/Top Speed on DOHC

The speedo error is generally increased as speed increases (think percent error); the faster you go the more error there is. the larger tires will do that, but most bikes are off by some modest amount; you need radar or gps to be accurate. I don't know what the redline is on a DOHC, so I can't...

    1978 XS400-2E Intro and Build

Meh, the fender isn't going to stop a whole lot, but I'm sure it does something. Its main purpose right now is to act as a cable-stay for the speedo and front brake cable  Thanks for the kind words.

    1978 XS400-2E Intro and Build

New paint. I used tan truck bed liner. It's a bit ghetto, but at least the bike matches now and there is some color. I think it is an improvement. It cost me just under $20 for two cans.
