    Kick starter doesn't always engage

Thanks, I will look into the push rod (first I will look in the manual to see how it works). It's not the cable, I released it and pulled the cable from the bottom to make sure it was loose. As for the plates, could they be so bad that it would slip while pushing it in 3rd gear?

    Kick starter doesn't always engage

It's not running, I can't turn the motor over with the kick starter or by bump starting it, that's why I suspect the clutch. It feels fine, I see the basket moving in and out when I pull it.

    Kick starter doesn't always engage

I opened up the clutch side, everything looks good - kick starter mount is intact, clutch moves in and out. How can I tell if the clutch is sticking? I took a picture, but can't seem to attach it.

    XS360 and XS400 motor swap

Thanks for the info, I would straight-up swap the engines, so I could still ride while I rebuild the 400. My 360 came without a battery (and a ground wire, strangely enough), so I thought I would stick the battery from the 400 in there. Turns out the 400's battery is about an inch taller...

    XS360 and XS400 motor swap

Hi, I am new to the site, and really happy it exists! I am 41 and live in Connecticut, have had bikes all my life. I bought a 78 XS400 (wire wheels, drum brakes) for a cafe project 2 years ago, and progress has been slow. This week I bought a really clean 77 XS360 (drums and spokes as well)...
