its becasue i am too impatient... If I cant find the tool im looking for quick - i go buy a new one. Then I end up with 8 different metric socket wrench sets, 4 cans of chain lube, 3 battery chargers, etc. If I dont keep it nice - i spend way too much money.

It varies based on many factors - I notice a huge difference almost 500 RPM based on the temperature outside in the morning. That all being said my 1980 runs 60 at about 6K and 70 at about 6500 at 7000 I am usually at 7K but bike gets shakey any more than that.

Are you sure your calculator is not broken? Even when my float was stuck and gas was pouring out of my intake, i still managed 41 MPG.

I checked all the electrical stuff and put the battery on a charger to top it off (its only 2 months old anyway). I pulled everything apart and I'm pretty convinced the starter clutch is bad. I ordered a replacement today - i hope that is the cause of this. I will follow up on here for future...

So my 1980 XS400S has been running fine for months. Now it wont start, kickstart really sucks and rarely turns over a cold engine, but works fine once the engine is hot. Electric start has been working fine all along, but now it is not. The starter motor is spinning just fine, but it sounds...

When I kickstart and it does not fire I get that frespinning sound as well. I have only had the bike since June but it has always done that, but otherwise runs fine - other than the electric starter issue i am having.

Check out your carbs, I had about the exact same scenario happen to me, and the nut that holds the needle had viberated loose and was keeping the float pushed down and it was flooding the engine. It was running very rich, and killing it, at full throttle i was at 50 MPH and sputtering the whole...

Excelent point! I usually put min on the center stand and put a few wood shims under each wheel so it balances between the two to get the bike level.

When I bought mine, i could not see anything in the window, so I checked the dipstick, the oil level was lower than the window so i added some more and then I could see it. there should be a dipstick attached to the oil cap too.

Do you have the mirrors available and pictures?

the needle was stuck - the float was moving freely, anyway - problem was solved last night - otherwise i would have been stranded 100 miles from home.

Had same issue yesterday, the needle was stuck and was keeping the float pressed down. gas poring out of the airbox.

I thought I saw something about this elsewhere on the forum - are our speedometers in general inaccurate, or is it a bike by bike calibration? If it says I am going 57MPH in a 55 zone I hope that is truly what I am going?

Just about any motorcycle shop on earth should be able to get you a new tire. Just search online for local shops to you and call around for pricing. I was quoted about $130 for tire plus install on my my bike, I wont need one for a while though.

I have the same shifting issues as you, I have found that if I am "stuck" in neutral at a stoplight, releasing and reengaging the clutch lever allows it to shift to first gear. As for the shifting to neutral between 5th and 6th - I am clueless, I have experienced this as well, its almost like...
