    Maxim Build

I'd rattle can gold them in a professional automotive spray booth. But I'm weird like that. But in all seriousness. I do like the gold look on mine. Also, no such thing as too many black bikes or wheels. They always look good.

    XS GP4 build

I've never used it before. My plan was to give it a shot. If it needs touch up over time I can grab the paint at my local or probably any advance or AutoZone. Also, I will not be riding this bike as heavily as my other bikes and mainly plan on using it for Sunday rides and car and bike show events.

Not officially. I looked at it in the summer with the bike on the center stand. I let the shocks loose so the wheel would drop flat and I could see what clearance I could get away with. You're right it's going to be close. With my weight added the suspension compresses and I think I'll be good...

I made my paper template. Confirmd that it would fit and I allowed enough slack for bends. The all thread in the above photo is using the very convenient piece of tube on the front of the frame. And the paper template fits nice. You can see the all thread better in this shot. With my shape...

Where were we? Ah yes......I borrowed a mig welder as I didn't feel confident getting a clean weld with the arc welder. It's been even longer that I've used a mig but it should give me a little better looking and more quality weld. The recycled rear peg frame worked like a charm and doesn't...

With the kickstands removed I started to attempt to fit the fairings designed for a 4 cylinder, liquid cooled two stoke; on to a 2 cylinder, air cooled four stroke. It became clear very quickly I would be cutting to make room for the wider frame and geometry. I did all I could to keep as much...

    XS GP4 build

Wow!! 2.5 months goes by fast. I have been working on the bike and been taking pictures for the thread. First things first. I've been adding tools to the shop and built myself a nice wheeled cart to minimize steps during the build process. That held me over until the fairings came in. And as...

I know what you mean. I've been held back by my own problems recently. But I finally made some progress on my project as well. I look forward to the pictures when you get them up.

Looks like you're making some good progress again. I look forward to watching you with your project. I have stated my own a few months back but my schedule and finds have caused it to stall out. I have new fiberglass fairings due in next week that should get me moving again on my project. Your...

Thanks Bill I appreciate the feedback. I've slowed down due to work travel recently but I am waiting on the fairings to come in. I have already received the windscreen from Florida, man we're they quick! Once the fairings come in I'll be moving up the bike for mounting brackets, and for the...

    Powerful enough?

The XS is no. Going to knock your socks off and that's ok. It's plenty powerful for the open road and it's easy to work on. When maintained properly you won't have to work on it much. It's not the prettiest bike out there but will take you and a friend on plenty of adventures. Being that it's...

Harbor freight has a tire changer with motorcycle wheel attachment. It's not the best but I know it would make the process even better. Especially breaking the bead on my newer bikes. It's definitely one of my next major tool purchases. The way I've been going through tires having the ability to...

    XS GP4 build

I was finally able to make some more progress. Nothing major but every little bit helps. Also, I learned a nice tip from the YouTube's for installing my own rubber . Don't remember where the video is but he idea is using thick plastic bottles as rim protectors when using irons. In the...

Sorry for the long delay. I was starting to think it might be years again until I could get back to it. I had been traveling for work but should stay home now for the rest of September so maybe I'll get something done. Let's see what's new.....picked up some new tools for the build. Well...

Ordered some stainless nuts for the sprocket today. Also had to use a thread file to touch up one of the studs in the rear wheel. Still need to order the new chain and sprockets. Also, have to find my spoons to fit the new rubber on the rims. I think my wife "put them away" for me after I used...

79 XS 400 make over. (Slow)

As long as the finished product turns out great it will be ok. And for the tank purists, theirs just became more valuable. Unless they don't have one yet, in that case, it became a little harder to find.

Yeah the booth is in a wood shop the guns are all air assist airless systems that spray lacquer. I'd have to invest in some guns to do it the right way. So for now, rattle cans it is.
