    VR test in owners manual

I was asking because when I disconnect the wire the bike dies immediately. guess I didn't mention that. Sidenote: That is one hell of a bike you've got there. Don't see that every day.

    VR test in owners manual

Referring to the manual for the vr test it says "start the engine and disconnect the wire running from battery positive terminal to the fuse box." Is this somehow not supposed to kill the bike? This is talking about the wire that connects directly to the battery, right? I don't understand this...

Voltage regulator swapped, still no charge

Still really confused about the vr test. "start the engine and disconnect the wire running from battery positive terminal to the fuse box." Is this somehow not supposed to kill the bike? This is talking about the wire that connects directly to the battery, right?

Voltage regulator swapped, still no charge

i cleaned all the connectors and checked continuity and resistance in everything that goes under the left cover as suggested in the manual. everything seemed to check out. The resistances were maybe .8 where they should have been .7 ohms but they were all the same.

Voltage regulator swapped, still no charge

So heres the deal. I tested the wires coming out of the alternator casing as the manual says to, everything checked out. tested the rectifier, its good. just installed the r-292 regulator, and now still no charge. you can see it go up maybe .03 volts going from idle to 3k. battery is fully...

    Rectifier needs rectification

i see. I went for the one that was ten dollars up from the cheapest one at autozone. It works great when it works...

    Rectifier needs rectification

OH YEAH. Just remembered why i forgot that the rectifier didnt work... I went to the local boneyard and the guy informed me that digital multimeters dont work on diodes like that. His 30 year old analog meter showed that it was working perfectly. Thanks for the memory booster. jeez...

    Rectifier needs rectification

Alright. So last year I started this thread: http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12997 and never got around to fixing it... Shame on me. But anyway, the rectifier shows no continuity (tested like in the manual) in the connector between any leads. Am I doing something wrong or am I...

    Volt Reg r292 swap question

Hmmm yup I was looking at the 80's wiring diagram. I am still confused about where the wires go though I guess. ^that photo seems to show the orange and yellow attached to the same wire on the other end. If i'm not seeing things there then Green goes to green, Black goes to Black and...

    Volt Reg r292 swap question

I have read drewpy's write up and drewcifer's write up on this subject. They were both very helpful with understanding the whole charging system setup and troubleshooting. My question at this point (I have the r292 to put in my 77xs400) is why are there four wires on the new unit and three...

    bad rectifier? NO charge

is that a guess based on experience or based on what I posted? Can a bad regulator make a rectifier go bad? According to the manual and my multimeter, the rectifier is bad. Unless I am doing something wrong. Theres no continuity between anything and anything else in the rectifier connector.

    bad rectifier? NO charge

Regarding the field coil test, (if I am looking at the right connector) the wires are green blue black and yellow. I get 4.2 ohms between green and black.

    bad rectifier? NO charge

First, I will say that I am no electrical genius. The bike is a 77 xs400. It has given me no problems until recently the "signal" circuit fuse blew and the battery is no longer charging. This happened last year while I was living with the bike out of town with no tools so I brought it...

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

Cheers, drewpy. First time riding my bike has ever fixed my bike. :bike: Its almost... poetic. haa mystery solved.

alright. I'll give it a whirl. Wish me luck.

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

let me reword that. there is so much resistance that if i were to ride it down a ramp out of a pickup bed, i would probably have to have somebody pull me down the ramp.

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

theres enough resistance that it dies when you put it in gear unless you throttle it.

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

pulled the cover off probably fifteen times now. has to be something wrong with the pushrod mechanism. quadruple checked everything else. this is going to drive me insane. worst chain/sprocket swap EVER. is there for sure another ball bearing on the other end? and does anybody know if it...

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

just to be clear, when you say "passing through the tiny hole" you are referring to the one the clutch cable goes through, yes? everything is clear there, if so.

77 xs400 clutch won't fully disengage, worked fine yesterday...

i dont know where to go either. the clutch push rod is moving through its entire range of motion. you can feel and see that its moving. for some reason there is still resistance though when you try to turn the wheel. i screwed the adjuster inside the sprocket cover IN as far as it would go...
