I am selling my 78 http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9991 The engine locked up last night. It was not knocking and was running well. I don't know what the problem is. I have the bike as it sits along with most of an 81 minus the frame. I am told that the 81 engine was run out of...

    MPG

I get right at 60mpg on my daily commute. I have 5 miles of highway that I run at 70-75mph then 3 miles of stop lights at 30mph. I weigh 200lbs. My bike is pretty light and set up with pods and emgo shorty mufflers.

    What size steering bearings?

I repack loose ball bearings every day at the Bicycle shop. Like xschris said. Lots of grease to "glue" them in place and you are good to go. A small screwdriver or pick is usefull for manipulating them as needed.

    Tach screw fix question

Is there any way to replace that little Philips head screw on the Tach face? I have 3 tachs and all of them have one screw that fell out and is rolling around under the glass. It appears to me as if that metal bezel has the edges rolled over the body. Is there a non destructive way to remove...

Just ran my '78 down the 1/4 mile

I found another video. This one is my XS vs. a Sportster with a screaming eagle kit.

Just ran my '78 down the 1/4 mile

I didn't do a burn out. I had no trouble taking off. Actually I had to slip the clutch to keep from bogging down. That zx-14 was running 9.60's. My closest race was against a Sportster that was running 12's.

Just ran my '78 down the 1/4 mile

I just got back from the "midnight madness" event here in St.Louis. My little xs400 was the smallest bike there by far. It was 1/3 the size of most of the bikes ('busas and zx14) I did a few passes with the fastest being a 16.43 @75.00. I felt like the little bike was not pulling hard...

    My '78 2e Build

I went with the 14.4" (356mm) They are really firmly sprung. With my 200lbs and my son at 80 lbs they don't move much at one notch up on preload. With just me on it I have them set at 0. It feels like a race bike though!

    My '78 2e Build

I received my longer shocks today from Dime City Cycles. Really nice guys and quick shipping. I also received a new headlamp that I am yet to install. The longer shocks make a huge difference. I don't think I will ever have a problem with rear wheel clearance now.

    new speedo?

I am a service manager at a bicycle shop. Most good computer (bicycle speedometer) are set able to just about any wheel size. For most you just measure one rotation of the wheel in millimeters, then input that value into the unit. Some may have preset values but should also allow you to set...

    My '78 2e Build

Yeah the rear is setting a bit low. The shocks are not that compressed it is just low. I should have lowered the shock mounts. I think I need something in the 13.5" range.

    My '78 2e Build

Success! I have finished the build. (are we ever truly finished?) After a long night and most of a day I got it up and running. I did have a bit of an issue that turned out to be a missed ground lead. I took it out for a quick rip around town and it ran good. Out on the highway I dropped a...

    My '78 2e Build

I am getting very close to road ready now. Engine, wire harness, gauges, and brakes are all installed. Tomorrow I will clean up the wiring and pick up a new bolt for my rear shock (somehow I lost it), and install my exhaust. I am having a small issue with my seat mount but it should be an...
