    Butt Puckering Death Wobbles!!!

I'm pretty sure it's not too tight because too tight is a different feeling its more of a dive left or right, then a wobble but hey its worth a trying both ways just to be sure. Oh and while this tightening thing did work for me I did eliminate all the other sources of error first I.e. new...

    Butt Puckering Death Wobbles!!!

@hishman I had the same problem and spent a lot of time fiddling with the wheels just like you but what ended up being the fix was tightening the steering head bearing ring. I adjusted it in little increments taking the bike out after each adjustment until the wobbles were gone. It's important...

    Just checked Fuse box, found a 10, 20, and 30 ?

The PO probably replaced the OEM flasher with an aftermarket one that doesn't have the self-canceling function. That's fine but you have to manually cancel the turn signal (which I like better anyways)

    Stripped out Mirror holes

I'm suprised no one suggested helicoils. I had a similar problem and tried jb-weld and then drilling and tapping that all to no avail. I then went the helicoil route and that worked perfectly. Be aware that It's kind of hard to find that 1.25 (I believe) helicoil expecially if your looking for...

@arfstrom sorry for the newb question but I would also like to know which part is the clutch boss?

    Top Carb Screws Stripped

I would get some PB blaster on those screws and let it sink in for a bit. Then using some vicegrips or the impact wrench twist them off. I would avoid just spraying carb cleaner up in there as it would reek havoc on the slider diaphragms

    Fuel Problem

These petcocks are vacuum operated when in the res/on position. Unfortunately these parts tend to degrade overtime and stop functioning. You have 2 options either buy a rebuild kit and rebuild the petcock (didnt work for me) or buy a new manual petcock (worked great for me).

    Newbie with a vibration issue?

I agree with Scorpio check your exhaust and wheel alignment as that can also cause a vibration.

    Help installing chainguard

Yup been there done that:banghead: anyways I actually took a rubber mallet and "gently" tapped it into place. I ended up scratching the brand new paint job:banghead::banghead::banghead: so I would advise you to take the little extra time and just unbolt the bottom of the shock, swing it out the...

    one carb races

I would check the cable and sync as well (plenty of how to info for this just use the search. Also I hope you were grounding the unplugged boot as it is very bad for the TCI unit to be left ungrounded (wouldnt want this problem to turn into a new TCI box problem):yikes:

What the H3LL are these called!?

Went through the same thing but I was able to salvage mine. During my research I did find them at boats.net specifically: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1980/XS400G/CYLINDER%20HEAD/parts.html number 15

    Tuning problems

some new information to report. I actually raised the needle 1 more notch (equivalent) just for the heck of it and while it actually produced a much better pull from about 4-7 RPM it still does the same thing with the surging with WOT (from 7k). I then as per suggestion went from 8 then WOT and...

    Tuning problems

thanks for the reply and yes I make sure to run the bike atleast 15min when testing jet sizes. I didnt know that 6500 was still in the midrange I will try starting at 8000 and going WOT. Going part throttle it will reach redline but it feels boggy so i will probably lower the needle.

    Tuning problems

I have once again tried all jets from 140-147.5 and no matter what when I go up to about 6.5k RPM then jamb open the throttle it looses power then surges (not smooth acceleration). I cant figure out if its rich or lean (they both seem to feel the same) except that when I put in the bigger jets...

    78 xs400

Nice bike but are you sure it's a 78 I mean my 80 looks exactly like that. I am by no means a bike ID-er but just thought I'd ask. As for the bolt I've tried everything the only thing that worked was welding on a nut.:( Welcome

    Tuning problems

They are Ngk but they are not fuel soaked just carbon fowld. Dave that's a good idea but its gonna be hard to put a tube in that hole that wont leak. better yet I have a few fuel nipples it would be great if they would thread in so it would be leakproof

    Tuning problems

I'm using mikesxs pods that have no inner lip and they are direct on the carbs. I have already tried using sizes 140-145 (1-3 sizes up) and still weirdly lean (surging) with WOT at 7-8k rpm. I have the needle raised with 2 washers (=1 clip position). Like I said I'm just as confused as you with...

    Tuning problems

Thanks for the reply. I would like to check the fuel level that way but as soon as I would unscrew the drain port gas will come out and by the time I'm able to jam a tube in there too much gas would have escaped to get an accurate result. I think that's only an option for the Dohc models. My...

    Tuning problems

Hey guys i've been trying to nail down my carb tuning after installing mikesxs pods with stock exhaust. I must have taken off the carbs at least 30 times changing jets, adding washers, ect. and still cant get it done. I'm currently at 145 mains (but started at 140-147.5), 2 washers on the needle...
