    Break-in period?

When I took apart my 100k km (62k mi) engine, there was virtually no ring ridge and cross hatching was still seen in the bores up to within 1cm (3/8") of the top of the ring travel. Oil consumption was less than 500ml (1/2 qt) every 10k km (6k mi) oil change, despite being beaten on most every...

    Electrical troubleshooting need help

Check all the fuses and their holders. Common issue is broken holders in the fuse box. Next would be corroded connections, or worse yet burned connections. I'd start at the voltage regulator connection. Let us know what you find!

    performance degradation

Cruising back roads will NOT get the engine fully warmed up at those ambient temps. But a highway run will, especially at that speed! Oil temp is what you really need to consider. I'm going to suggest that your main jets are too large. You didn't mention surging, which is often an indication...

    Parts Needed 83 Maxim

@heritage, I may have one and I'm not far from you. Unfortunately it will be next week before I am home and can check.

What did you do with your XS today?

Try ethanol free premium grade fuel first. Those plugs look rather good to me. The right one in the picture may be slightly lean. But only slightly.

Can you repair a carb diaphragm?

The diaphragms are most certainly NOT related to the bike stalling. The diaphragms are only in play above (approximately) 1/2 throttle and 4000 RPM. The JBM diaphragms are good. Just be sure to use a tiny drop of super glue to secure them to the slides. Without the glue, the slides can rotate...

    Valve adjustment tool - 1982 xs400rj

Get yourself a bright flashlight and shine it down the spark plug hole. When a valve is open, you will see the head of the valve. Insert the wire tie between the valve and its seat and rotate the engine so that the valve closes on the wire tie. It may help to bend the wire tie into an "L" shape.

What did you do with your XS today?

Been removing parts and accessories to install them on my new bike, a 2011 Kawasaki Versys 650. Some day I'll get the Maxim's engine rebuilt, but until then I need a workable bike.

    Valve adjustment tool - 1982 xs400rj

Nope. It is easier to insert a thick nylon wire tie through the spark plug hole and then close the valve on it. This provides lots of room to change the shim and takes seconds to accomplish.

What did you do with your XS today?

Agreed. I got the head and barrel's off the old engine last night. Took some swearing and beating with a large mallet as the head studs were corroded into the barrel's. The YICS chambers were full of sludge, but otherwise the engine looked rather good for having 100K km on it. I did find the...

Bending frame rails on bike possible?

You would have to cut the tubes, pack them with dry sand (wet sand will create steam and possibly explode), cap the ends and then heat the tubes red hot with a large tip on an oxy-acetalyne torch. Then, while still red hot, you could bend the tubes without them crimping or crushing. Not the...

What did you do with your XS today?

Well, the cause of death was heart failure, as always (that is a coroner's way of saying "They died, stop asking questions"). More specifically, one or more of the cam chain guides failed. This resulted in the cam timing being grossly incorrect. Valves met pistons at 5500 RPM and that was the...

What did you do with your XS today?

Thanks, yes I still have that engine. But it was getting rather tired and one of the cam lobes was making metal. It will probably provide parts though. Well, that may be a possible cause, though the rev limiter did do it's job. Hard to say at this time.

What did you do with your XS today?

Well, I just got home and grabbed a quick bite to eat, and it is now technically morning... But I'm going to grab a couple hours sleep and wait for daylight before I try unloading the bike from my neighbours trailer. It is a tall utility trailer and i'm tired.

What did you do with your XS today?

Looks like I blew the engine. I heard a noise and before I could pull off the road the engine cut out with a nasty rattling noise. Now it won't turn over, so I guess the timing chain let go and pistons met valves. At least I have cell coverage while I wait for a trailer and ride home...

    PopMac's XS400 Maxim Cleanup

I don't understand the issue. :umm: Go to www.fortnine.ca when the page loads enter the Motion Pro number I provided earlier (05-0027) in the search box at the top and press return. There are 2 results returned, one for the exact cable and a generic Motion Pro clutch cable listing. Click the...

What did you do with your XS today?

When deciding to pass a couple slow cars, be sure you know what gear you are in before performing a double downshift. While the acceleration is brisk above 8k RPM, one must be prepared to up shift quickly lest they run into the red on the tach. Thankfully my rev limiter did its job, though I...
