    Difficult Kick Starts When Cold

The main thing with mine, hot, cold, or in between, is do not touch the throttle. Don't even look at it!!! When it's cold, use full choke. Starts first kick. When it's warm, no choke. Starts first kick. When it's in between, good luck!

Engine stops after warm, start only with max choke

The petcock on my 81 needs repair or replacement. If it is in the "run" position, it runs out of gas in just a few minutes. I have to keep it on "reserve."

What did you do with your XS today?

Dave, Dave, Dave! You're old school enough that I shouldn't have to tell this. You have to cuss in Japanese! It doesn't understand English.

easy to make a seat pan

I don't like it. I'd rather use sheet metal, a hot wrench. and my body and fender tools.

Holy Grail of XS400 Big Bore Pistons

What did you have to do to the pistons you used?

What did you do with your XS today?

There are always lots of old jap bikes around. Just recently I saw a near perfect restoration of a CB500 F and a really beautiful CB450. Right now there are several nice GoldWings on the market, and I know of a SWEEET Triumph TR6R. Seattle and Portland are always good places to look for nice...

type of paint for cylinder head and engine cases

Duplicolor has a whole line of engine paint. They even have heat resistant clearcoat.

    Another exaust thread with ?

All of post #5 is true. However, it's also true that when our bikes were built the japs always hung about 20 pounds of muffler on each cylinder, and used ridiculously restrictive intake systems. Most old jap bikes perform better if you open things up so they can breath, and then re-jet the...

removing dents from the gas tank

Looking at that dent, if it were me, I'd find an old school body and fender man who knows how to pop the dent with air pressure.

Holy Grail of XS400 Big Bore Pistons

While I was out riding today, I became really intrigued by the lighter crank Aaron posted. I know from personal experience with race bikes that when you reduce the weight of the rotating assembly by a couple pounds, the performance characteristics of your engine change A LOT. The weight...

Holy Grail of XS400 Big Bore Pistons

I got your PM with the piston info. Thanks, it's good stuff. I like the GS500 pistons because that is a fairly popular motorcycle that is still in production, or at least it was still in production very recently. That means good parts availability. The stock GS500 piston is 74mm. 74mm X...

Holy Grail of XS400 Big Bore Pistons

You're probably correct. Heavy flywheels reduce vibrations. They also use up potential horsepower. Having owned 4 Harleys and two BSA singles, vibrations ain't shit to me:D Lighter flywheels result in more HP to the primary sprocket, and allow the engine to achieve peak rpm's quicker...

    No Power above 4000/5000 rpm

These engines seem to work best if you keep the revs up. Putting around at 2000-3000 rpm's a lot causes them to load up. When I first got mine, it was so carboned up that it would fall apart above about 6500. I went out on a favorite back road and ran it above 5000 rpm for about half an hour...

    More power?

I can't help but notice how often posters in this forum cry about money. I started building bikes with my father in the 1960's. Honda, Kawasaki, BSA, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, and Harley Davidson all fell victim to my cutting torch and welder. I'm a good builder with 40 odd years of...

Megacycle Cam for SOHC (group buy?)

I plan to purchase a mega cycle cam, so I'm open to the idea of a group buy. In addition, There is a guy at Wiseco who is helping me determine which 73mm pistons are compatible with an XS400 engine. The TTR250 looks damn close. I'll keep ya posted.

How many of you are fishermen and what is your favorite species?

Oh ya! I fish for any and all species. I'm the Sturgeon General, the Prince of Perch, The King of Crappie, the Terror of Trout, and the Sultan of Salmon. Smallies are my favorite for a few reasons. 1) They are an awesome food fish. 2) No other fish I know of fights like a...

    Introduction and questions

I don't have any wheel and tire balance issues, and a longer wheel base is inherently more stable than a short one. In addition, the japs always had a bad habit of using front tires that were a bit to small. I'll address that when I buy tires. Intake and exhaust improvements are a given...

    Introduction and questions

I just read a post where someone said you can use Kawasaki GPZ1000 pistons to get 440cc. Anybody know if that's good info?
