Is this clutch plate separation normal?

Hi all, In the course of investigating a kick-starter issue on my 79 XS400F, I took the clutch cover off and noticed something that seemed odd to me. Only the first two (outermost) friction plates appear to move when the pressure plate lifts as I pull the clutch in. Should they all be...

    Old pistons in new cylinders?

Hi folks, Not been here in awhile. My efforts on the XS are a bit sporadic as I keep striking issues with getting it going. Now, I happen to have a set of NOS standard size barrels for my 79 XS400F. I was hoping to find new std pistons but they don't seem to exist in the 'A' variant I need...

    Fitting MAC 2-2 to a 1979 XS400F

Hi all, Been awhile. I bought a MAC 2-2 system some time ago and fitted it to my 1979 XS400F. Was never happy with the way it fitted but put it down to bent pillion footrest hangers throwing out everything. Had to use spacers etc. Last month I picked up another 79 250F that is battered...

Need help with gear shift mechanism

Thanks drewpy. I've been spinning the input and output shafts as best I can whilst operating the shift pedal but admittedly it's not very fast. I'll get my wife to give me a hand and see if that makes a difference. I imagine trying to move the gears whilst they're not spinning that fast puts...

Need help with gear shift mechanism

Hi guys, Progress has been somewhat slow on the XS of late. I am having an issue with the gear selection, so wouldn't mind your thoughts. I re-installed the gears and joined the crankcases, then tested the gear change. The selector pawls don't engage the pins in the change drum. So, when I...

What did you do with your XS today?

Cleaned up engine mounting bolts with petrol and steel wool. Good result. Will employ this on the engine case bolts also. Discovered I'd been sold two RHS rear upper engine mounts, so need to source the LHS one again :( Fitted one of the two shift rod blind grommets that came in the mail...

    Greetings from Sydney

G'day PC, thanks for the welcome. Whereabouts in the Inner West? I'm in Ryde. I have created an album for the re-build, but I'll add some pix to this thread. First two were taken in 2005 when the bike arrived on a truck. Others are current.
