    A substitute battery

I don't know the wiring diagram off the top of my head, but it's probably worth checking out the fuses, or updating the fuse box if it hasn't been already. I'm not sure of the question or the problem. Does the bike start with a charged battery?

    A substitute battery

I think that there is a risk of charging the small motorcycle battery at too high of rate, especially if it is a deeply discharged dead battery, allowing a lot of current into it, more than the battery can absorb. That causes outgassing of oxygen and hydrogen.

    A substitute battery

If you have a small charger, why not just leave the battery on the charger between tuning sessions?

    Beware: eBay Master Cylinders

I bought an ebay MC as well, I had a hell of a time bleeding it the first time. I think I spent over an hour doing it. I was positive I had a defective unit at first. First I filled the reservoir and bled the caliper, but there was zero lever feel. Every time I pulled the lever, I could see a...

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

Just wanted to follow up. I got the springs out and compared them to what was available at McMaster. I think that the springs I got are still a little too stiff compared to the original, but the good news is that it works great. I'll update later today with the specs on the springs. I measured...

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

Ahh, that makes sense, so it's called a trapped roller clutch. That's an interesting way to make a one way clutch, thanks Under Dog for the video! Understanding the mechanism helps me understand where to look for wear and other failures.

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

I apologize if I'm a little dense, I still can't understand how the round metal barrels grab onto the smooth sprocket shaft. Wouldn't the barrels just spin or slide along the sprocket?

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

thanks for the reply! To be honest, the more I look at the parts, I don't understand how the clutch engages. I understand that the rotor/clutch assembly is fixed to the shaft (with the woodruff key), then the sprocket somehow turns the clutch. How do the spring loaded dowels possibly have...

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

I forgot to mention, I'm 99% sure it's not the starter itself making the noise in my case. I watched the bolt on the rotor spin occasionally, and make the clacky noise when not spinning, as if the clutch wasn't engaging.

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

Sorry to bring back this old thread, but I finally got into the starter clutch this morning. (I put off this bike for the last year, but my GF just took the MSF and is interested in riding). When I removed the rotor/clutch assembly, one of the cylinders fell out. I took a look at that one and...

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

Good point, it does look a little loose compared to the other pictures I've seen online. If you look closely, you can see that the chain ate into the edge of the paper gasket on the top. Would I be able to see some damage from the jumping chain on the sprocket? Is the chain tensioner...

    New Master cylinder

I bought this exact MC off eBay, largely because the guy is located in the US (only took a few days). It was only $25 last month when I got it...

    Crazy helmet idea or not.

How big of a hole are you drilling? Is it not cool enough leaving the visor open? I would agree with the above to avoid drilling and compromise the integrity. But in the end it's your helmet and your head, I think it'll still be better than no helmet!

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

Thanks for replies, guys! I just took off the cover and I have no idea what I'm looking at. The kickstart turns the engine over no problem (doesn't start, but that could be a multitude of things right now). The starter itself seems to spin fine, as far as I know. It spins and sounds...

Trying to start, sounds clacky (audio)

I finally got to trying to start the old XS for the first time since buying her. I'm not convinced every nook and cranny of the carb is perfectly clean, but I was eager to try see if it would start. I bolted in the carb, plugged up the vacuum lines and ran a temporary gas tank (with fuel...

Measuring Float Height with clear tube on older carbs with no nipple

I have a '78 model where the float bowls don't have the nipple to attach a hose to. I have the carb out of the bike and want to check the fuel height before I put it back. I believe I want the fuel level to be 2mm below the upper gasket mating surface of the float bowl. Any suggestion on...

    DOHC 10.5liters/100km

I believe the Idle/Pilot mixture screw has effect at all levels of throttle, but its effect is most noticeable down around the 0-25% level. http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm

    DOHC 10.5liters/100km

This is where the idle screw is located. Based on your signature, I would guess that the idle mixture screw looks a little different on yours. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7979944@N04/4689682730/ I think this is more like the one you have...

Online purchase conflict, what would you do

I purchased a set of carbs from a member here at the end of May, when I got them, they looked nothing like the ones listed in the pictures. In the post, they were listed as "good condition ready to mount" The carbs I received were much rustier, the fuel inlet nipple was rusty and broken off...
