Coker Diamonds or Firestone Deluxe Champions on 1978 XS400

Continental and Michelin have suitable sizes. Don't by cruiser tires, they are not expected to provide handling, just longevity. (who corners hard with footboards?) I ran Contis on my XS650 and SR500. They were very well suited to the bike's abilities. I'd expect the 400 to do well with them...

Coker Diamonds or Firestone Deluxe Champions on 1978 XS400

Both of the tires you mention are for classic bikes, but they mean classics like the 20s through the 50s. If you want 70-80s classics, then you want Contis or Dunlop K70s. Conti ruled the motorcycle market in the seventies, and somehow lost their way by the 80s. So if period correct rather than...

    Hillbilly Ultrasonic cleaner

I've watched a number of his "informative" presentations. They all sound very plausible. Most are amusing and all but a few are outright dangerous. At first, we couldn't tell if it was supposed to be very dry humor, but have decided that he is completely serious. One way to thin out the gene...

Looking for "discontinued" main crank bearings

The other option is to have a good auto machine shop polish the crank journals and fit the thicker inserts. This is done on autos all of the time.

bike wont rev past 6000 rpm - problem solved

Good find. The handlebar switches do this too. I have seen it there, but not the CDI box. Thanks for the write up. In the electronics world, many times it is bad connections rather than failed components.

Yes, but it has been cold recently.......

1980 XS400 Idle mixture air screws

Carb parts don't weigh much, and you can cram a lot of them into a small box. A group buy is the way to go if you have to pay big shipping fees. You could stock up for the next overhaul, which will happen sooner or later.

VM carb size for built xs400?

Nice clean bowls. I'm not referring to the diaphragms as the source of grief with ethanol, but the carb body and jets/passages. Zamac and ethanol are a bad mix. Brass isn't a lot better. If i recall correctly, you can use the small jets anywhere, but the large ones only some applications. I...

Looking for "discontinued" main crank bearings

+1 on the S&S tip. They are a few miles away from me and the source for NOS Yamaha parts. They have your bearings in stock right now. Good price too.

    Decals anyone?

Closeout, so priced very well. https://www.denniskirk.com/stickerpoint I used some of these on a tank repaint a few years back. they were actually quite nice and held up fine. Price is certainly right.

VM carb size for built xs400?

Very wise idea. While I'm not a super fan of living with the CV carbs in an ethanol rich environment, they do allow a much larger carb to be fitted than straight slide-needle versions. And you can live with them and not rejet for every temp change like large slide/needles would require...

microwaving riding gloves: just don't try it

You beat me to it. There are all sorts of versions for everything from fishing waders to winter boots. Several manufacturers. All work very very well. An added unexpected bonus is you can use some of them to pre-heat your gloves and boots prior to a cold ride. Depends on model/type.

VM carb size for built xs400?

I was considering the same thing for the standard engine. I'd say that in order to be usable on the street, 32s would probably be more like it. Bear in mind the 650 runs best with 34s unless it has a 750 kit, and36s are getting towards the too big end. I had a set of 36s on my 650, and ended...

Anyone have experience with this style clip on?

I see what you mean. The hand tubes appear to be pinned on and the entire thing doesn't look very robust. Full disclosure: I am not a fan of clip ons. However, there are a lot of well made ones out there. I think this is an area where going cheap isn't going smart. When it comes the bars, pegs...

    Lean idle mixture=Higher idle?

Thank you very much for the compliment. I am in the business of correctly resolving problems, not symptoms. It is very tempting to try and offset(fix) the symptom. But in the end, it is both better and cheaper to actually fix the problem. Otherwise, you'll be back, and next time it will require...

    Lean idle mixture=Higher idle?

Too rich could be too high a float level. Could be a lot of things. Could be poor compression from bad rings, scored cylinder, too tight or badly seating valves, etc etc etc. Don't correct symptoms, find and correct problems. Correcting symptoms instead of addressing problems is a task...

1980 XS400 Idle mixture air screws

International shipping is a step beyond highway robbery. If you're going to pay that dearly, I'd be sure to fill the package with at least four of everything I needed, and a few things I didn't. Nice job on the extraction. Most end up drilling through the side of the Zamack casting.

Gas tank Re-sealing a all ready sealed tank

It can leave a void behind the original sealant, which can rust. If you don't plan on keeping the tank, then don't bother. But have to ask: why ask? Because plans have a nasty way of changing without your input, I'd fix it like it needed to last another five years. Then do whatever you need to...

Admin: how about a carb sticky

I agree with all said, but sometimes not knowing what you don't know is part of the problem. The rest is just laziness. Many get on these forums to socialize, lurk, etc. Some do it to be helpful. Many should just go away. But we're all here anyway. After rereading the same questions over and...
