    81 SX400H

A more or less normal symptom of the bike starting to charge at about 2000-3000 rpm. Annoying, but pretty much normal.

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Yes, I'm sorry, I forgot to do the FINAL update on my side. After syncing the carbs (they were WAY out of sync, I could just hear how the bike stabilized once they were getting synced) the idle would drop below the set RPMs after a slight rev-up, indicating too rich an idle mixture. So I kept...

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Oh yeah, that's definitely it. I thought you had done the emulsion tubes. ;-)

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Are your needle valve seats the thread-in type that have a sealing washer underneath? If so, I hardly think it's your problem as mine were the push-in type with an o-ring. I'd double check the jet sizes. Make sure your pilot jet (42,5) has a screw plug with an aluminium washer and properly clean...

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Just to give this the final update: The mixture screws had to be backed down full FIVE turns out to achieve sweet idle mixture. It is now as silky an idle as it gets.

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Ok, I went throught the carbs once more and found out the o-rings on the needle valve seat were not sealing properly. I replaced them and everything seems to be working fine. By the way, compression was about 165 psi on both cylinders.

Right cylinder not firing on idle

That's the only thing I couldn't do, but using my thumb I'm sure there's loads of compression as it flew very, very far, and the kickstart is pretty firm, too.

Right cylinder not firing on idle

Ok, here we go, guys. I've recently bought a slightly neglected '81 XS 400 SE with 50 thousands kms on it. I've done just about everything I could to make it run. 1) I've cleaned the carbs several times, checked the diaphragms, float levels (I've got plastic floats, couldn't find any...

    Choosing main crankshaft bearings

Okay, thank you, that's what I thought, but the chart sure is confusing. Further on: the higher the number of the bearing, the bigger the clearance they have? If so, would I be able to put black instead of blue if gives the whole thing enough clearance? Or is it a no-no? We all know these...

    Choosing main crankshaft bearings

Well, the thing is the other engine (the one that failed) is already painted and finished in other ways, that's why I'm looking for this option.

    Choosing main crankshaft bearings

Hello XS world, I've recently opened up an engine that had metal shavings in oil, so I thought the crankshaft journals were shot, which proved to be right, what a mess it was inside. Anyway, I am now in the process of replacing the crankshaft with a different one together with responding shell...

    Bigger sprockets, longer chain?

Hello fellow riders/builders, I'm wondering - will I need to get a longer chain if I go one up on front (17) and four up (43) on rear sprocket? It is a lot, so I suppose I would. But just in general, is there a rule of thumb to calculate this? And more importantly, will I be able to extend a...

    Front brake rebuild

Hey guys, so during our build, I've got to the part where I'm gonna rebuild the front brake. I've pushed out the caliper piston and found masses of dirt and sand in there as well as some rust and corosion on the piston. Is it necessary to replace the piston if it has some slight scratches and...

    Clementine: Brat/Tracker build

Any chance this thread is still alive? A great build overall, I just can't help but ask: what adjustments were made to the rear brake lever as it won't allow the swingarm go lower after applying longer shocks? Thank you.

    Yamaha XS400 Wiring Diagrams

Hey there, guys, I've been looking for barebones diagrams that were available for 5.99$ on eBay. The seller has withdrawn the item and I can no longer buy it. I would gladly pay them the amount of money, but I can't seem to contact them. If anyone could PM me, I'd be immensely glad. Thank you...

Recommending a good "acceptably loud" muffler

Hey there guys, so I'm gathering stuff for my winter build and I've been looking through some mufflers and I wanted to ask you. I'm looking for a piece that's loud enough to turn heads yet not too loud for peaceful travelling. How are for example the Emgo Reverse Cones or Shorty Mufflers? Any...

    Broken-off idle mixture screw needles

Just to let everyone know, after trying to punch them out, bringing the carbs to a higher temperature, I ended up drilling them out. And voila, I'v managed to set the mixture just right!

    LED flasher relay opinions

The Oil and Neutral controls work just fine after being plugged. :O The turn signal control, however, was only flashing when I turned on the left side. It's not that necessary so I might as well drop it. //If anyone wondered, it's because of polarity - when the bulb didn't work, I just flipped...

    LED flasher relay opinions

I've never really found out I have one. Do I? It's a '81 2A2 European model. I don't think so. :O And will it work if I put an LED to the control light bracket?
